Name plate restoration

I have the timber(unknown type) of my Grandfather’s schooner.
The timber looks a ‘little’ friable/damp and the paint ly about to come off.
I want to hang if on a wall in the house.

Seeking suggestions on how to stabilize it and restore it.

Dry it and then a PVA -water mix sprayed on?

IIRC it is a conservation technique in use in museums.

PVA as in polyvinyl alcohol mould release agent
Or
PVA as in polyvinyl acetate wood glue ?

A weak solution of the wood glue, repeated once previous applications dry.

Saw a restorer using it in a museum documentary.
