Thinking of changing name of recently acquired boat; its not registered and was wondering what I need to do if anything, do i just go ahead without any red tape, assume so. Would appreciate advice. A little concerned when I come around to resale that it could look odd. I have heard its bad luck, but as i believe you make your own luck thats not an issue.

I've changed the name of my last 2 boats. I think it's bad luck if you have to put up with some other bod's idea of what's a good name.
Just peel off the old one, bit of a compound, and stick on the new.

Seriously, there is nothing you need to do. No harm in Registering on SSR if you feel you need to. When you come to sell (if through a broker) their specification form may ask for previous names of the boat but, IMO, this is unlikely to put off any serious buyer.

My personal, supersticious, opinion is that I would not change a name. I did it once and lived to regret it. Funny thing this nautical stuff. I once new a senior RN Officer who painted his Volvo engine white on the grounds that he would not have anything green (unlucky) on the boat.

Having said all that - Good Luck!!

One area that could be a problem is any VAT paperwork will be in the name of the old boat, so unless there is a means of proving that it is the same boat, you could consider registering with the old name and then re-registering with the new, and thus providing a papertrail.

If you do not like the name, definately should have not purchased the boat. BAD BAD LUCK.

Do insurance companies charge more for boats with a changed name?

Inform the local HM and insurance company and the Coast guard That about it, funny how "Luck" comes into the equation take a look at the 1000`s of deep ships running today tha have had several name changes, why worry, best advice is a short easely phonetic word, for vhF tansmissions, some boats names are so long that you would sink before spelling. Just a thought. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

If you are taking the boat abroad you will find it a lot easier to check in at Spanish and even more so at Portugese marinas if you have as much documentation as possible.I changed the boats name when I bought her as the previous name meant nothing to me.Registered her on part 1 at Jersey therefore no Insurance tax to pay and also a lifetime registration. All I have to show is Part I document ,Insurance and passports.I was boarded twice this year, once in France and once in Spain having full documentation made the process quite easy as they also wanted proof of VAT paid.
If you are superstitious when you change the name invite Neptune to join you for a drink and explain your name change.
Boat is now SHEMESH previously Emerald Sparkes.

OK, thanks for the advice, seems the name change should be ok. There must be a hull number or the like somewhere to satisfy VAT concerns, i'll check that one out. If its ok by Robin K J, its ok by me!

I have to admit, other than the bills it would also put me off having a volvo engine.

People who don't believe in Neptune or the seriousness of changing her given name should not own boats...

^^ ducks ^^

Anyway, I think the proposed new name will bring good luck

"Rabbits Foot" is an unusual name for a boat
Good luck whatever you do.
