Reading the article of Morelli on biocide free solutions, I missed mine: nó antifouling.
When you sail a lot, and I do - just finished a 6000 mile training loop on the Atlantic this summer - and you are a bit audacious with your boat, you can keep her clean by hand, without costs.
Five seasons back I had my aluminium Koopmans 44 blasted and coated with Sigma Shield 460, a glass-flaked filled epoxy used on ice-breakers.
From then on I cleaned my boat 2-3 times a season by hand, at scrubbing posts, cays or beaching her with careening posts. I need just óne tide of plus 2 meter to have it done. A lot less work than the weekends on shore sanding and painting of my colleague sailors.
The main problem now is the lack of belief among authorities that my boat is really poison-free. Beaching a boat is forbidden in many countries for environmental reasons, a rule designed for boats wíth anti-fouling. Exceptions for a boat without aren’t given. So I need to act ‘illegal’…
