I anchored (as directed by an experienced Humber sailor) in line with the East Halton brick chimney a few days ago. When I went to look at google earth to find out what it looked like from the land side I was surprised to find it was smudged out. Any Humber experts know why?

I would say the field is flooded and the highlight is the sun reflecting back at the camera. The slight purple being chromatic abberation through the slightly hazy atmosphere as the light comes back up to the camera. Sort of a rainbow really.
There are the objects in the field casting shadows and a barn or something in the SouthEasterly corner casting a sharp shadow.

Sorry, no idea about the area, other than a couple of very enjoyable sails up there....

I've recommended this before, but.....
No bells and whistles like Google or M/soft but uses the same data and quick!
Lets you switch between different "suppliers" and chose best for each area....

I wonder if we're looking at the same place 53°40'20.61"N 0°14'54.88"W

by the way the holding there is terrific... just as well given how the tides run

Can't agree there. Below is the Lakeland Ltd Headquarters in Windermere.
The Live Earth shot which although it has more contrast and colour saturation (which can be interpreted incorrectly as better definition) you can clearly see that it is a much poorer picture, of much lower definition than the Google Earth image.
It is also years out of date showing the old buildings which must make it at least 5 years old.

I have noticed that Google Earth images tend to be about 5 years old, also.

Does anybody know how often they plan to update (if at all)?

By the way, I'm sure that when I looked at Lizard, Cornwall, a year or so ago, on Google earth the southern tip was lower resolutio than the rest. It is now guite high definition. Do I remember right? The images don't seem to be particularly up-to-date though.

The Google Earth image of my street lends itself to fairly accurate dating because you can see the shadow cast by a bike (Honda VFR) which I owned from January 2005 to July 2006 parked across the street, and by the state of one or two nearby construction sites.

Its not just my apple tree's that don't show up but the entire estate where the house is located - all these ariel shots just have a field tho' the newest ones have a large expanse of chalk sub soil... the estate was started in 2002/2003.

Overlaying the maps works tho - streets on green fields!

However we moved to somewhere that does appear from space earlier this year!

I wish they would date them! Troon marina has our Ericson on a pontoon(1999), but the house in Prestwick was scanned earlier before the S1 landie went (windows local) Google is a different time altogether as there is nothing in either location to pinpoint the year. I think it might be a continual thing and that we should always carry a large golfing umbrella as well as wearing our hoodies when 'out and about'.....
