Mystery Object

Can anyone shed light on what this is,? It is about an inch log, mounted at head height in the saloon, has a wire from it that disappears from view and was already fitted to the boat when we bought it.

It looks like a sensor of some sorts, perhaps carbon monoxide given the height it is mounted at but I cannot find any alarm for it.
