Hi all

I have purchased what was described as a "Seaplane Tender", its prob not as its a bit small-30ft. I really want to identify it. pic is below, its wood with (original grp?) skin, twin Humber engines, and lifting eyes INSIDE the boat.
I think its a ship boat.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Mark

I doubt very much if GRP on wood is original.

I'm not familiar with Humber engines either, sound like they may have been replaced at some point. what size/HP are they?

Internal lifting pionts is something our Navy specified often.

You say she is wood, how is she constructed? What timber? how fastened?

Looks very much like a pinnace with a retro fitted doghouse/windshield.
It might be worth asking around your local sea-scouts/cadets branch. They were given these boats when the "mother" boats were scrapped.

Hi
The engines are in line 6's, pic below.
Not sure on size still working my way through the Humber Owners club website! think they are 150HP, not sussed out the cooling yet, appears to be indirect, to be honest I think the engines will be the very last thing I do!
Some the deck fittings have "WD" and the military logo stamped on them

Hand rails have been removed, controls removed but a complicated steering arrangement is still in place.

I can send more pics to you.

Construction appears to be single diagonal 4 inch wide planks on chine, vertical single planking on sides (sorry still getting up to speed on correct terms!)

Not sure on fasteners.

I will go up to Greenwich this weekend and try to do a bit more research. If I can trace what she is, I will commit to spending some time/money on her.

Thanks for info
Mark

Yes Ditto. There must be something I could use one of these for, at £500 they're a bargain!.....

I'd hazard a guess that whoever covered the outside in GRP re-planked from the chine to deck, explaining the unpainted wood inside.

by the look of the painted over copper rivet heads I reckon the bottom is double diagonal, and I suspect the sides were diagonal planked until they were replanked.

Hi Ben
Bit of a mystery this one, the bottom appears to be single diagonal, I cant figure out why the sides would have been replanked I thought the bottom would have "gone" first.

As you can prob see the sides have vertical planking!
There is evidence of a small fire on board, looks like it was where the batteries were housed, still some burnt wood etc.

Got a couple of leads so hope to get more info soon, it looks very much like one of the ships boats on the "current" Ark Royal.

Hi Again!
Took more pics of her today and confirmed that the bottom IS double diagonal /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Think she may be a basket case but someone has spent a lot of time and effort on her so I want to know why! My new signature below should sum up how I feel....at the moment!!
