Hi there,

I'm currently looking at a Myra Plast 23 with a view to making a purchase, but would like to find out more about the builder and the boats before I commit - only problem is, I can't seem to find much info online and the little tidbits that there are tend to be in Norwegian! I gather that the 23 has a semi-displacement hull with a top speed of around 14 knots with the biggest engine option, displaces 2 tonnes and sleeps 4. Does anyone know any more about them? Particularly whether they have sea-kindly hulls (its not always pleasant in the Big Russel!), if anyone knows their RCD rating, or if the yard had a good reputation? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

OK ... as a Norwegian having messed around in boats since I could walk, here we go...

Myra Plast, was more popular in the Northern areas of Norway (bolds well for sea keeping) and sort of not that popular further South, where Saga, Tresfjord, Fram, Nidelv, Viksund etc., had a stronger foothold.

Having said that, they were well built and actually did very early on trigger on to a hull shape which combined the "double ender" tradition with higher speed. Myra 23 is a quite "wet" boat, as she has a sharp forefoot, and no real chine to deflect the spray sideways, so her wipers will get good use. Her sharp forefront will cut well through waves, but in following seas her rather flat aft section will venerate lift and she will have a tendency of requiring a lot of helm input.

Interior wise, they used good quality wood, but some of the hull-side coverings were a bit Spartan when compared with it's Norwegian competitors ... but that was also reflected in the market value of the boats.

Never heard about any of them suffering from osmosis and plenty of them still cruising the fjords of Norway today ...

Myra was never a mass producer and actually started production in a barn on Myra Farm in the late 1960's (Hence the name).... and not many boats made it out of Scandinavia from my recollection...

The history of Myra Plast A/S does have two other facets that may interest you ... Twice they went into receivership.... in 1971and 1980. As a result Myra 21 therefore exist in two more versions, Nordfjord and Møring 21, which was manufactured into the 1980's.

Myra did get a pretty good reception in Sweden as well, so you may get a better response if you expand your search to include both Norway and Sweden ... and the two other names for the boat manufactured with the same moulds...
