My toilet\'s bust! Is it a new one I need?

My Par Jabsco manual toilet (Pre 1997) sprang a small leak and on investigating I find the top of the pump cylinder has cracked across three of the screw holders where the screws pass throught the gasket into the base. Gluing it hasnt helped as they broke off again. I know which part I need but so far I've been told "Buy a new one only £95!" Any ideas for sourcing spares or is it a new toilet for me? The leak isnt bad but I need a permanent fix! I'm going to try Araldite next while I research the solution.

Buy a new one! No discussion. I once replaced all the gaskets on my bog (same as yours) and the replacements had screw holes just not quite in the right place. It leaked from places it never leaked before. Go cheap, buy twice. Just do it.

You can buy a replacement pump for about 1/2 to 2/3 the price of a new toilet. But, that said, it is still probably worth buying the whole thing new.

Does this use those crap twin thread self tappers? I had a leaking pump top that I cured by replacing the crap screws with nuts and bolts, but it does depend where the leak is on yours.

Did the same with mine, used nuts and bolts..

Self tappers they use.... slightest pressure and the plastic underneath cracks off !

After spending £££ over 3 years on replacement bits of plastic and rubber from Jabsco/Par I finally saw the light and bought a decent toilet in the Lavac.

Easy repair...

You can get spare parts easily from the Jabsco online shop. If it's the pump cylinder, it's about £20. See here and use the Spare Parts Wizard to look up your toilet. I've got one of these toilets on my boat, and mine dates from 1990, but is still working fine, with very few replacement bits added in the last 8 years.

Totally agree.
How many posts does one see regarding horrid problems with Lavacs?
I rest my case.

NB no connection with company other than as relieved user.

I agree with every person who's replied: scrap it and buy a new toilet--preferably one that's a bit higher quality. It may cost you as much as £100 more to buy, but which is really more expensive--£99 every couple of years? Or £200 once every 20 years, plus a £50 rebuild kit every 5-6 years? Not to mention the ability of the better toilet to "swallow" flushes that would choke the Jabsco.

I've always hated any of these toilets with plastic bits, on the old Bavs they fitted Rheistrom ones with all metal parts. You never feel like they're going to break. Great toilets that never blocked!!! more than can be said for some other boat toilets I've known of.

Replace, no question. I have a Lavacs & it is allegedly the original fitted when boat was built 30+ years ago & still working fine. Ok the manual pump has been overhauled from time to time, but it is still 100%, no leaks & the pump spares are common with main bilge pump, so saving there as well!
Go for it!

Re: My toilet\'s bust! Is it a new one I need?

We're just contemplating replacing our loo and trying to work out what to go for. We have a Wilcox Crittenden headmate that is probably 10 years old. We've replaced both the joker valve and the seal round the pump, but the latter is still leaking despite a big clean and repacking.

So - obviously lots of praise for the Lavacs. Anyone have experience of the Wilcox Crittenden Skipper II? Or other decent loos.

We're only interested in manual toilets which can be set up for a holding tank/discharge as needed. Also we want a decent size seat. We liveaboard so these things matter!

Re: My toilet\'s bust! Is it a new one I need?

My Lavac toilet was great. They are simple with effectively no moving parts to go wrong.

The pump is seperate and diaphrams are easily changed when necessary.

The seal is the only part that may perish and is easily replaced.

On my new boat I have a jabsco, that to works just fine. I occaisonally lubricate it with some cooking oil, have replaced valves once.

If I bought again, I would replace the jabsco as its instalation would mimic the existing loo.

Re: My toilet\'s bust! Is it a new one I need?

The W-C Headmate is a "budget" compact toilet...10 years is a bit longer than its usual lifespan, so you've gotten your money's worth from it. The Skipper has always been a top of the line toilet, comparable to the Blake, till Thetford-Norcold bought W-C a few years ago...I'm not so sure of that any more. So I suggest you go with a Blake--the Lavac (but only the manual, not the electric) or any of their toilets.

Among less expensive toilets, the Raritan PH II (about $250 here in the US...not sure what the UK price is) has long been rated the best manual toilet under $500. With minimal maintenance, it'll last 20+ years and can swallow just about anything except what shouldn't ever go down any marine toilet.

Btw, ANY toilet can be set up to flush overboard or to a tank...the toilet itself has nothing to do with that, it's only where you route the discharge hose. So I wouldn't rule out electrics...the Italian Tecma toilets are outstanding, reasonably priced, and consume little power. Take a look at them here: http://www.tecma.net/nautica/index.html

Thanks for your comments. We don't want electric as a long distance sail boat (eventually) fussy about power but will now look thoroughly at Blakes.

BTW - love the book which has ner Bible status on Roaring Girl!
