My sooty rear end...

After a quick blast to Yarmouth and back from Hythe the rear of my Corniche seemed extra black and sooty - with the dinghy and even the canopy being affected. The boat seems to perform ok and the problems that I have had (leaky gaskets and heavy breathing mainly) are now almost cured...

The engines are TAMD41s and according to engineer run well so how can I defeat the soot - and yes I do use S$$$$$n ?

Have I got a huge issue here or could it be a matter of injectors etc???

Thanks

Nick

I used to get soot around my exhaust until I used Soltron. You say you already use it, have you always got this soot then or is it a recent thing? If its a recent thing I would say there was some kind of problem going on there.

I have always had some soot and have always used Soltron since we have owned this boat - its just that the soot seems worse of late but perhaps we are just using the boat more and going on slightly longer trips?

The engines are revving and running ok but the soot just seems to cover everything and seems worse in colder wetter weather (I think)

Seem to have it in my brain may be injectors or the like??

Thanks

Nick

I spoke to a person in Yarmouth with the same boat and engines as me, he had terrible problems with soot (which I have never had) until he had the injectors re-set, apparantly the problem was solved instantly with this.

My hunch is now firmly injectors but by having them sorted will I get any improved performance/economy etc??

Had my injectors done over the winter because i was smoking, it fixed the smoke problem and made the engines much smoother, did not give me any more speed or economy though. I was just glad to get rid of smoke and soot.

with out saying the obvious

soot is partially burn't fuel, so too much fuel is being put into combustion chambers.

injectors and pump.

injectors are easier to service, but the pump is just as important and does wear and alter its settings.

hmm, might be injectors, but when did you last fit new air filters?

injectors dont go from good to bad over a few hrs mobo use, look how long they last in a truck.

Airfilters however do get v messy, esp if you've done a down wind passage and all the exhaust muck has been sucked into the back of the boat, we used to change them very regularly on the charter mobo's I looked after.

'Col' knows where to get them cheaper.

Thanks Ben as I had'nt thought about air filters - actually they were changed quite recently and when checked by me yesterday they looked cleanish but will check again.

It just has to be good news (expense wise) as its my birthday today!!!!

Im on the case now thanks all

these injectors need a VERY GOOD diesel shop to check them with the latest test equipment and if at all doubtfull they will change the nozzles which can not be repaired.

There have been many cases of extra expence because the injectors had been pop tested etc and thought to be OK but were the problem .

Wish I could get some S$$$$$n out here Nick.(for Dom if hes reading) Neils Fairline 50 smokes a lot, its a 1987 boat
with 360hp Volvos. His transome is forever sooty.
My lovely little Sealine on the other hand has the exhausts exiting under the water which
seems to eradicate any soot, plus its a lot younger I suppose.

Nick, I seem to remember from my motor boat days that certain Corniches suffered this problem due to poor engine room ventilation. The engines were not getting enough air to run correctly, and were, to use a non technical term, running too "rich" - almost like running with the choke out!!. I'm sure I've read about this in a MBY article several years ago. I cannot remember what the fix was, but maybe you should check to see that a previous owner has not bunged up the engine room breathing holes to keep winter frosts out. Just a thought,

Cheers

mike.

Thanks again all but having spoken to Phil my much trusted engineer he reckons that the injectors are ok and that there may be a simpler (and cheaper) explanation.....

The story so far is that we bought this boat last November and had her anti fouled and fully serviced etc before moving her to Hythe.

On the trip round with the Suncoast Boys and full tanks she was running all day at 23 Knts + a bit in favourable conditions with some but not major sooty deposits on dinghy and transom.

Since we have been based in Hythe the speed seems to have been dropping almost as the soot has been increasing.

Phil says he is 99% convinced that it is growth on the hull that is causing the engines to work too hard etc etc. This may be bourne out by the fact that the engines do not seem to smoke on start up or low speeds and he suggests that I have her out for a mid season scrub.

As MDL are doing an offer at £72 for berth holders at present I have arranged for her to be lifted and scrubbed next week and am ever hopeful (I seem to spend much of my life being hopeful) of a positive result.

I will keep you informed..........

Thanks

Nick

I expect you'll find a really good marine garden hanging on to your boats bum. If you can make sure the props are not only cleaned but give them a rub with some wire wool to bring up a shine, that will also make a difference.

Nick, I'm not sure I made myself clear. The problem reported was air starvation due to inadequate ventilation into the engine room, and not an injection problem. Maybe, next time out, you could try removing one of the cabin floor boards to allow much more air into the engine compartment, and then see if the problem is gone. I'm not too technical, but I'm sure it was the lack of air intake that caused the engines to run too "rich", and hence sooted up the transom etc. It was either in MBM or MBY and would be about three or four years ago, and it was a technical reply to a readers query who had the same problem with his Corniche. I'm sure it was reported as a know problem.....

Cheers, Mike.

Thanks Mike - you may well be right on this too and I will further investigate. Interestingly the boat was recarpeted with "sensible" cream carpet by the previous owner who only chugged up and down the non tidal Thames and never took the boat up to any sort of speed. Since our ownership we have noticed dark edging to the carpet developing around the hatch openings having only really used the boat at sea.

Would this imply some sort of venting problem even though I always run with the fans on ? Having said that this would take air out rather than bring it in I guess...

How can I find out about the article you mention also ?

Thanks to all
