my 57 year old sailing friend Cedric has been diagnosed with a mild case of None Specific Age Related Melancholia

he feels short of energy, lacking in enthusiasm, out of touch with his adrenalin

He sails a 23 footer and feels that he has utterly lost his Joie De Vivre

he is on the 5 and 2 diet, has given up whiskey and has not sailed for three weeks

He was wondering if anyone else on this forum has been a victim of NOSPARMs and could suggest proven strategies that have helped them through it

Should Cedric go back to the Whisky?

Forget he ever owned a boat?

Take testosterone supplements?

Cedric is a shadow of his former self and is now quite desperate

I am more than happy to pass on your suggestions

This season your best friend Cedric is not alone in this syndrome

I quit drinking many years ago.
I still have the occasional glass of a nice Malt for medicinal purposes. Never go sailing without it.
Current remedy 10 yr Macallen which is very restorative.
Although I strongly recommend an Islay for it's exstra mineral content and vitamins. I like the flavour to. Bruichladdie or Leaphroig or Bunuhavin.

Works for me.
My old man used to prescribe Brandy and Port as a general cure all. you could try it if the whisky doesn't work

Probably a case of SPOD - Seasonal Pissed Off Disorder - normally seen in winter but may extend into Summer if sufficiently winter-like.

I believe it's down to the confusion that arises from a combination of winter-like weather and long daylight hours, with only a few hours of darkness in any 24-hour period. Usually solved given a little time and the
return to short days and long nights.

Does he feel the cold more than most people? If so it could be an underactive thyroid, although it is more common in women.
It is a genetic thing. If anyone in his family has the condition he could as well. Mrs Lakesailor was put on to it by her sister and her brother also has the condition.
Easily treatable with tablets. You are on them for life, but the good news for someone of his age is that all your prescription charges become no-cost.

Definitely worth having a simple blood-test. You often have to insist at the quacks as it probably effects their practice funding income.
