One of the compartments keeps going down?

It has not got a hole in it! So I suspect it is the valves?

How do I check and is there a common fault on them?

I understand that those valves are designed to let pressure down if it gets too high?

I would think you can get replacements but never had this problem. I would fit new ones. best not to try & repair old tired ones, Theres a rib & inflatable centre called Barnet Marine in Nth London 0208 449 4142 they may be able to help you more.

I had this problem with my Avon when brand new.... I pumped it up and filled it with water to see where the leak was.

One of the v/v's was not tight. The v/v actually screws into the tube. I used the end of an open-ended spanner to undo it - check the seat and then torqued it tight using the spanner.
Bingo! All fixed. Be careful please, because when I thought I would check the other side the v/v seating came off together with the cover and it was a sod to chase the v/v back into place and re-assemble.

It clearly had not been inspected at the factory.

The valves will release pressure if pumped too high or hot day, it could be you have dirt on valve seat, common problem.
Suggest you over pump to check blow off on valves this will also reseat itself afterwards and will probably sort out prob........

Not all valves have pressure release systems - normally these are offered as an optional extra. If you haven't got them fitted don't try to test like this as the tubes will go "bang".

Try a smear of vasaline on the inside of the valve caps.

I think "Bang" is a likely to be a massive understatement!
