Radio casset thingy. It works for a while, then it's dead. Works again some hours later. Tested all the wires. Checked conections. They all seem good. But then again. The problem is intermitant.

The radio is relatavly new, maybe four or five years old.

Only thing I suspect. It's had an Ipod plugged in via a casset thingy which is a bit like a casset with a wire out the end to plug in Ipod. Has this blown the radio!! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Chuck it and buy a new one - cassette type /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif, at least you have moved from 45's (I assume? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif).

The new ones often have plugholey things to plug IPods (and the better alternatives) into and play things called CD's.

Yep. I know all that. Even converted the confuser from steam to diesel.

But none of this will help if problem is not radio thingy. Can Ipods blow radios?? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Can a radio work/not work. I thort they were all solid state stuff these days.

Hard to see how the ipod could cause any damage. If it's connected by a cassette thing, there is no electrical connection, it's all magnetic - or am I way off base?

Agree, and if there's 12v at the radio when it is dead then tis the radio. Might be something simple might not.

Worst that can happen if a new one plonked in and doesn't work is that we will get another of Hadyn's very interesting fixing the boat stories /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

Now look here. I've specially come over to impoverished boat owners for a sencible answer. Why do I get crap Other folk seem to get quite sencible answeres though not being electrificated. I would not have a clue.

My bigger problem is. I got 60 meters of chain in the car, it's been there for a couple of weeks. Cant get it out. Though did it bit by bit today to paint marks on it. Is there a way of mending chain marks on car bumpers?? Also the paint was a bit wet when I put it back in. So both car and chain is a bit red all over. My plan is to move both car and boat to boat dock. Will using winch drag both chain and car into dock, or just the bucket that chain is in. Clang! Is there a system I can use to drag old chain back up to car as new chain comes down. Will it deposit it in the bucket. I realy need the old anchor left on deck. Though not sure how to unatach it having used lockseal and rust. My little bent rusty knackered junior hack saw does not seem up to the task.

My car needs renewing, though I do not believe in HP. My income has dropped. Alarmingly. I also have a boat to feed. Along with many marina staff. Not forgetting the mechanic, upholsterer and other itinerents.

Now is my radio twatted. Every other word dont work! Do I buy a new one tomorrow? Is there now a plug for the Ipod that just works!!! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

You got a voltmeter? As ships_cat and twisterken and others said, if the radio has 12v reliably at the radio power in, then any problems are in the radio. Ipod won't damage it. If it's playing up, then easier to replace than fix - as you said they are solid state and not a lot you can do to repair if it has power.

If in doubt connect directly to a 12V power supply that doesn't use boat wiring. If it works reliably off that, then wiring problems. (I'm assuming problem is no power, front panel doesn't light up etc? If it has power but doesn't make sounds, then aerial and speakers connections need to be checked)

For car marks, is bumper painted or grey plastic? These guys do great work for a lot less than marine types http://www.chipsaway.co.uk/ Otherwise just paint rest of car the same colour.

Moving chain. Your car is going to end up in the water. Buy a new junior hacksaw blade and some different colour paint to mark the chain. If the car ends up in the water, the firebrigade will want to know how deep the car is under.

New car? Drag old one into the water with the aforesaid markings. Make a few mistakes on measurements (fairly major ones help), and cut 95% through the chain near to car. You really don't want the firebrigade to recover it. Then claim on insurance, when firebrigade drop it back in after they've just about lifted it ou.

Ipod plugs work fine. You just need a new radio that works with it. One of these will come with the new car. Transfer to boat.

It is highly unlikely the Ipod has damaged the radio. That kind of damage through blowing fuses etc usually results in smoke and definitiely won't work again. The symptoms you describe are more atributable to corroded wiring or connections either inside or outside the radio. So pull the radio and try connecting it up with serarite wiring to different speaker etc. The fault can only be in battery supply or speaker connection for casette CD Ipod etc.and aerial connection for radio. good luck olewill

Does it fade slowly then die or wham just shut down?

If it is fading it sounds like a component getting hot up to a point and then shutting down. This is where freezer spray comes in useful. It could also be a dry joint that opens when the amp gets warm, this you can fix. With patience, it involves re-soldering every joint, with circuits you can narrow it down somewhat, but as you say you are not an electrician I suggest taking it home, take the back off and carefully re-melt every joint on the back of the circuit board, it is mainly just one board in an old radio.

Of course, this is following you making sure the +/- 12v supply is getting to the radio.

If you do knacker it with a heavy handed soldering iron then you have lost 18p worth of stereo, otherwise it may do the trick.

The other lubbers method is to power up with the covers off and see if any components are getting hot, not warm, some stuff when it breaks down really starts sweating, you will be able to feel it cooking by wafting the back of a finger a cm above the components, get back to us if something is cooking.

There's your answer then.
Remove useless radio. Put in car.
Remove car radio. Put in boat.
Sell car.
Problem Solved.

Re: Close

Remove car radio

Fit radio in boat

Pull boat into dock with chain

Use boat windlass to recover chain

Claim for new car on boat insurance

Buy new car
..........................
Invoice in post

PS aren't you a bit old for an I-Pod

Probably his magnetic personality /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

Anyways, we have a number of working but not now used car radios/players here which I would willing donate to your cause 'cept would cost more to send one from here than it is worth.

However, I am sure many forumites also have ones around they could give you, if only to plonk in and see if it is the boat or the radio that is the problem.

The problem to watch for where some have suggested of just swapping with the car is that the car one is likely to be security coded which would mean on the boat would have to have a backup power supply.

Looking forward to your ankory chain getting out of the car onto the boat story.

John
