needs rigging. Does anyone have any contacts or detailed pics of a 15' lugger or a Drascombe Dabber that might help me on some of the finer points? Please refer to my entry in 'Wanted'
nothing for sale. I have revised the standing lug on my lune pilot 15' slightly to make lowering sail in a hurry a bit more controlled. I got a bit of help from these two links:
I started with a ring running up the mast. but swapped it for an all rope arrangement. I also put a 6:1 tackle on the downhaul, which is overkill (I was wanting my 7 year old daughter to be able to get decent tension on the luff).
Good luck. Feel free to pm me if you think I can help any.
Thanks for all those links Robbie. Very helpful indeed.
I used to own a Lune Longboat - a cutter with a lug rig that employed a ring to carry the spar. Downhauling was good for the stomach muscles as I recall - before they disappeared altogether.
Would you keep your eyes open for a couple of masts? I have an idea that, at the back of some boatyard, lurk spars just waiting to be re-cycled. I'm resigned to the idea of new sails at a price beyond that which I paid for the boat
Have you put an advert on the "wanted" forum stateing what size you are looking for? If you explain what you are doing you might get a good few pairs of eyes looking around their boatyards for you.
Sadly no response from the 'Wanted' section.
However, I'm looking for the following minimum dimensions:
main 14'x3"x3". main gaff 10'x2"x1.5"
Mizzen 9'6"x2.5"x2.5". Mizzen gaff 4'3"x1.5"x1.5"
Bumkin 8'x3"(?!)x2.5" and a bowsprit.
The lugger was the first made by Padstow Sea boats over 25 years ago and seldom used as a demonstrator while generally stored in a barn. Sadly, the spars and sails etc were lost in a fire.
Its round about this time in a thread that someone usually comes in and humiliates me by saying something along the lines of "You really should make your own you know. First select your tree and sharpen your adze......"
Doubt you will find second hand drascombe spars. People who sail drascombes will probably only replace their spars if they are completely knackered. However there is a drascombe owners website and you might try there if you have not already done so.
How about butchering a mirror dingy for your mizzen spars? There is virtually no market for second hand mirrors now, and you may well pick one up for free if you remove it. For the main you may be able to cut down something from a bigger boat, if not it has to be a phone call to F. Collar.
As luck would have it, Collars received my scaled drawing/ enquiry via email this afternoon. I'd already established that they would quote me a sawn price - despite their polite observation that they are very busy putting enormous orders together for the large classic yachts we read about in Classic Boat.
The mirror dinghy idea had also crossed my mind insomuch as I restored a couple the winter before last and was idly wondering what it would be like to rig the lugger with a mirror's gunter set up - and if I could cope with the ridicule on a temporary basis.
I'm sure your right about the likely state of any drascombe spars that may be available. However, a website plea might turn up something.
Thanks Michael. Very valuable advice in many respects - and particularly interesting with regard to the benefit of a boom.
Talking to authoritative tars one gets the feeling that the Drascombe 'loose foot lobby' might just be born along on the tide of loyalty and general affection for the boat - rather than through the most efficient use of the wind.
My sails aren't ordered yet (other financial priorities). However, i've done the donkey work on a nice tight grained, knot free, colombian pine main mast, and I might as well cut a boom to go with the other five spars to come.
