My old Mum said to me the other day that when she was younger she would have loved to have owned a boat and just stayed within sight of the shore thus allowing her to follow the coastline around until she finally reached the Med.
This... from a Lady who's first husband was a Skipper, second husband a R.N. Commander, two brothers who were in the M.N. and my Godfather who was a well known Greek Shipowner and a Skipper in his own right. I gently quizzed her and she has absolutely no idea really beleiving that if you stay a 100 yards or so offshore you can just follow the coastline to where ever you want to go.

Makes me think of the countless conversations in the pub. People telling me how I should just sail down to the med and back for the weekend. All agreeing with each other. Course I'm the boring one that says it cant be done that way. So the conversation dies and every one stops speaking cos I'm being awkward.

Just sparked off a little project that we've been up to, Byron. My wife's father, who died some 35 years ago, was on a French cruiser in the war ( Le Triomphant) as a British signaler and kept a diary of all the incidents, rescues, island evacuations and goings on in the Pacific at that time. We've been matching the diary against internet researched events and obtained pictures and acounts from those who were rescued....it's got me gripped

Why does everyone immediately think of Onassis when a Greek Ship Owner is mentioned. In shipping circles he was only a medium weight. Dudes like his first father in law Livarnos could buy and sell him from petty cash. What about geezers like Goulandris, Niarchos, Lemos (my G.F.). I suppose because they never courted publicity and married Jackie O types people don't know about them.
As a matter of interest Onassis came from Smyrnia not Greece, his family lived in the same village as mine. With the help of the British Royal Navy our families escaped the Turks in 1922 and got taken to Greece. This is why even today most of the major Greek shipping families are all related in some way or another and barring Livarnos all trace their roots back to Smyrnia and not Greece.

This reminds me of a meeting with my Headmaster of 40 years ago, introducing my wife to him for the first time, whilst attending a local charity concert. I spotted him in the foyer and taking SWMBO by the arm went up to him and said: "Good evening Mr. Holdsworth, this is Sandra my wife,.... Sandra, this is Mr Holdsworth my old headmaster" without a change of expression 'Fred' Holdsworth said just two words. "Former Headmaster"
