Took a bit of a flyer and bought this on Fleabay. The seller was 'reliably informed that it was unused' !! The oil pressure in my box is getting low so I thought it may be handy to have a direct replacement.
The 'new' box does infact look fairly new so I'm hopeful it will be ok. The numbers match those of my existing box so the prop should go in the right rotation!!
Three questions for the panel.
1) when I rotate the plate at the back the splined shaft does not rotate (in astern, ahead or in neutral) Should it??
2) the bell housing is from a BMC engine I presume I can discard this and the flywheel?
3) the drive plate at the rear has 4 bolt holes whereas mine has just 2, I guess I can just change these over.

Most grateful for any words of wisdom!!

I guess that it is bad form to answer my own question in the hope that someone out there has an answer.
We are off to the boat ( in France ) on Friday and I don't want to take the gearbox out without at least an answer to my question (1)
Thanks

It looks like a hydraulic box in which case you won't be able to spin it fast enough by hand to generate enough oil pressure to push the clutch plates together. try it on your other gearbox without the engine running put it in gear and see if you can turn the shaft without turning the engine over?

Very many thanks guys. I'll chance another question and ask " what sort of engine revs are needed to spin the prop shaft then?" If I could get something onto the splines I could possibly get it spin. It would be nice to try it before swapping them over!

Hard to say really it might work at 100rpm or it might need 600+ rpm to get the pump to create enough pressure to engage the output shaft. can you google the unit specs? should give you the manufacturers ratings and specs which would give you a good indication of what sort of RPM you need to achieve to see a result.
I recon it'll take more than an 18v dewalt though!!

the prop turns in gear @ tick over, well it does on my boat & you have the same set-up already
