Thought some might be interested to see our new PC. It isn't blinding fast as it uses a fanless 667MHz processor, but it runs charting SW just fine. Has a shock-mounted 40GB HD

It's waterproof (2 metres submersion) with a 10.4 inch 800x600 transflective TFT display, sunlight viewable. Runs from 10 - 30 V dc and consumes about 25W. And before Nigel asks, no you probably couldn't afford it!

Are you sure about the processor (667MHz)? That's very slow by todays standards my home pc which is 2 years old has 2.6GHz processor, I think that equates to 2600MHz

Yes, it's 667MHz which is slow by home PC standards. Home PCs run up to ~3.2GHz but with a very hot CPU which is why you need massive heatsinks and fans. This computer has to run fanless in a wide temperature range.

All the same, it isn't as slow as you'd imagine as much of the perceived speed is in peripheral access times which are fast

Wasn\'t going to ask ....

Cause as you know - I have a good idea that being WESGECO is going to be outside the realms of my pocket .... most forumites in fact .....

Nice though ...

FYI - I have a 12V ITX already - got it near a year ago ... lovely piece of kit - it's just screen that needs sorting ... it's also the reason I asked you about WiFi on board .... I install ITX in a hole away in the cabin ... then PDA / other remote via WiFi .....

Anyway - display and screens a bit different from the old data text stuff that I steered to in keeping a shoot line ..... degree left, degree right, up a notch speed, down a notch speed.... etc. !!!!

But then again I learnt with Syledis and CGG .....

Re: Wasn\'t going to ask ....

As you've discovered, good screen technology is expensive especially if you want sunlight viewable. This PC would set you back about £3,000

This is the display you'd be using today to steer with (in waypoint mode). You're probably more familiar with running lines, I'll get a screen shot next week in line mode. In the mode shown, there are 2 little icons around the azimuth ring (bottom left). The outside one shows course to steer and the inner one shows cmg. You just steer until they line up, easy! It helps when your gps updates 20x a sec instead of once every 2 secs like yachtie ones

Schlumberger and aircraft sockets....?

Will you be adding a touch screen, I wish my plotter had a touch screen....

Re: Wasn\'t going to ask ....

Very interesting post from my point of view as I am currently doing some research for my girlfriends father on this very subject.

Are you are to provide a pic of it from the side? I am interested in its dimensions and weight!

Other points I would be interested in are mounting options, inputs and outputs, and can you do it with go faster strips?

Okay I can live without the strips! I am playing around with a tablet PC, some charting software and a WinTV USB 2.0 device at present. Meeting gf's father in two weeks to and going to try putting a few things through there paces.

At present I am concentrating on functionality and then will step back and start analysising power, heat, noise, etc...

Needless to say there could be an end product when I have finished that could end up retail, but I have a lot of work ahead of me.

If you are interested in chatting at geek level drop me a PM.

Re: Wasn\'t going to ask ....

Touch screen, no. It takes away 25% of the screen brightness on day one and much more by the time greasy fingers have been at it

Re: Wasn\'t going to ask ....

Magic

We've invested a lot of research into this, especially the low profile which I'm not able to reveal yet. It includes some novel connectors to keep it watertight whether connected or not - this wasn't easy.

Our market is internal - we make the kit to carry out our own surveys and I'm the lucky guy who get's to design it and put it all together

Always happy to chat

Re: Wasn\'t going to ask ....

That button bottom right

We couldn't think what icon to put on it, realised every time we used it we made money so it's a dollar key. You'd press it far too often!
