well i set off from peterbrough two weeks ago,i made it as far North as Bridlington then i was storm bound for 5 days, even the fishermen were not going out beyond farnborough.I met up with some great guys from a boat call Zitsu and another called Angelina.

I pulled in at the South Humber Yacht club on the way up and found them an unhelpfull lot,on the way back down i pulled in at Grimbsby, the marina is excellent the fellow sailors frendly and at a tenner for a 26ft boat per night, great value for money, after that i anchored at Spurn head, looks like a fantastic place for a Pirates meeting,i sailed south to Wainfleet and the guys there were a most helpfull and friendly bunch, after that i sailed around the wash for a few days

On my way out of the nene i had intended to pick up one of the visitors bouys at RAF no4,it was quite dark at the time and i spotted a bouy like shape so off i went to pick it up,i kept loosing sight of it and after about ten minutes i grabbed the flashlight and found to my great amusement that i had been chasing a seal (wot a plonker i am)

all in all i covered about 320 NM and had a most enjoyable time.

Tried calling you on VHF after your phone call, nothing heard and no mobile reception so couldn't check with that. Good to hear you're back and alright, stop chasing the seals though, you might catch something :D

after that i anchored at Spurn head,l
Very strange place. When the kids were little we lived in York and should occasionally drive down there on stormy winter days just show them a glimpse of the end of the world.

Hi. Sounds great, wish I had the time to get away and do some serious sailing rather than round-the-cans stuff.

Am interested to know where the South Humber Yacht Club is located, is it at Winteringham Haven? If so, your comment sounds about right! I have lived in the Former People's Republic of Humberside for 14 years, and still fund the petrol bill to do all my sailing in the Blackwater, so unappealing are the waters of the Humber. I used to cycle across the bridge to work in 'Ull, and looking down at the overfalls when a flood tide combines with a westerly gale, the mucky water fairly boils. Great bridge though. When it lost its crown as the longest suspension bridge in the world to that one between Denmark and Sweden, it became known locally as the biggest bridge in Hull!

Snap!

I work in 'ull too, and sail out of the Orwell...... worth the commute :)

Crossing the bridge every day, I occasionally see a lovely sunny day and a boat out there, but more often than not, see a wet, brown 'orrible day....

We took the narrowboat down the Trent under the bridge and just about got into the river Hull before it dried out. We were like sitting ducks, and we've been stoned before, but the good citizens of Kingston upon Hull went one better and started lobbing bricks at us!

That sounds very familiar! I rode shotgun on a motor barge about five years back, from King George Dock round to the Old Harbour, carrying crude palm oil up to Forge Wharf, and fortunately we had all the bridges raised so avoided being bombed. It was quite an eye-opener concerning speed of passage, as my car driver's view was that all the bridges go up in sequence to give the vessel constant speed, but oh, no! It's council run, see, and the two blokes (yes, two, job creation and all that) wander by foot or bike from bridge to bridge, have a tea break at each one, and the vessel's progress is painfully slow. Having said that, combine a ship with a rush hour, and it's chaos for miles around!

Sorry, to get to the point, I was reading the log of the Humber inshore lifeboat a few years back, and tripped over the bald statement 'coxswain shot'. On further investigation, the poor bugger had been shot by kids using an air rifle, it didn't list the severity of the injuries. I don't usually subscribe to all the Broken Britain stuff, but 'Lord preserve us from Hell, Hull and Halifax!'

Morgana, I sail a couple of times a year on the Orwell, usually the Levington Classics, and just did Pin Mill SC Regatta a couple of weekends ago, aboard my mate John's Stella, Lys. Sailorman got a few nice shots of us, Stella 96.

Good trip, wish I'd got some spare time....

The Wainfleet lads are a good bunch. If you're near the Humber again try Saltfleet instead of Humber mouth, much the same setup as Wainfleet, but the pubs are closer and the locals are friendly! :D

I think that there is a problem with my new aerial, thing is i dont know how to check an aerial? i tried a continuity test from the metal rod at the top and it did not buzz out with either the shield or the conductor?? I would have expected some sort of a beep between the rod and conductor

the south humber club is entered about 500 yds just after the southern most fort.It is not for keel boats that dont have the capacity of lifting the keel,i have a shallow draft and it was sand/mud so i followed the channel and still found the bottom,i was a bit early at 2 hours before HW.I was going tp pull into Saltfleet but it would have meant sitting at anchor for 8 hours or so so i kept going,i will do it next year.

The coast line was interesting, especially the holderness coast, the UK is dissapearing into the north sea, there were a lot of buildings that had fallen from the cliff top on to the beach,it was about 30 miles of the same stuff.

I was hoping to get past Farnborough and have a look at the Yorks and Northumbrian coasts but the weather put an end to that.

I did find a good launching slot just south of Brid,so maybee next year ill tow the boat up and launch from there.

It was my first real test of my new auto pilot, must say that im very impressed with having that on board.

No that's one of the Humber Yawl Club havens. I'm surprised you think they're unfriendly, I have found them to be an extremely friendly and helpful lot.

Matt, is your boat at home or at PYC ?
If home I can pop over with my meter and h/h to check you out, if not I'm sure we can sort something out anyway rather than go out with a possibly dodgy aerial

I walked into the South Humber Yacht club and politely asked where the nearest Petrol Station was,the people at the bar almost fell off their stools laughing at my question.
