Some may remember that I knocked up a small anchor (Rocna based) a few weeks ago. This is how it performed.I made it from memory, not drawings so got the shank angle too narrow which stops it from digging if laid on the hoop,I'm going to widen the angle and try again.I'm amazed that people still persist with CQRs.I see loads of new yachts with them.Even with the shank angle as it is it's remarkably effective digging itself in in less than on length. The holding power on wet sand was nothing short of amazing.

What did it cost you to make?
Actuallly only the price of a few 3mm welding rods because I had some scrap stainless lying around but it would cost no more than 70 Euros to make a 15 kg anchor. When I made my 15kg mild steel main anchor it cost me about 40 Euros in steel plate and the hoop plus 10 Euros for hot dip galvanazing.

Rocna did at one time have full size patterns on their website but the links were removed to prevent every one downloading and making their own

I have the pattern for a 33kg and a copy showing the dimensions for their complete range in pdf format.

Could you send the PDF to me?I was thinking of building another one.

Looks like it set well, but I am surprised you could do that by hand. It must have been very soft sand.

I set my 1.1kg Guardian dingy anchor (aluminium) by hand when I bring my dingy ashore it will often hold more than I can pull.

Keep up the good work.

You could try sharpening the leading edges. Turning down the nose tip (like the Ultra) would help with your problems and would be easier than trying to modify the angle.

Reducing some of the shank depth near its base would also help with weight distribution.

Spade do still have patterns on their site for making a surprisingly accurate cardboard mockup with which to check sizing, bow roller clearance, etc.

I guess with the lead tip, curved "spoon", and hollow shank, it's not so easy to weld up a working copy of a Spade.

Sounds like you may be perilously close to breaching intellectual property rights. You might not want to discuss this in such a public place!

As it was downloaded from there web site which did have an open link at one time I think the info would be considered to have been put into the public domain. Also to take any meaningful action the copyright holder would need to prove losses and as I have not caused the copyright holder any significant or in fact any losses at all any action would fail.

In fact I did make a pattern of the spade in hardboard from the a download from the spade web site and fount it would not fit my bow roller when my other anchor was in place. I did modify the shank and use a modification of the spade shape to make a all steel anchor using 20mm thick plate for the spade and the shank, shank being a different shape to the true spade to all it to fit my bow roller.

I did test it by towing it behind my 4x4 on a local beach at it did dig in OK but not having access to a real spade could not compare.

Pic shows both anchors in bow roller.

I have also fabricated several danforth type anchors for various boats in the past including my current boat shown on the second pic below

All the above is nonsense : It is perfectly possible to maintain copyright whilst publishing a work on the web, that in no way puts it into public domain. Rocna have lost the value of the sale of one anchor to you and that is quite enough to get a court order if they chose.

"Rocna have lost the value of the sale of one anchor to you"

I have not made any anchor like the Rocna so no loss of sale to me and when I worked in Engineering design in the UK I was very aware of the need to not make direct copies of any copyrighted items.

If you say that I caused the loss of sale by providing info to a third party I would contend that there would be no certainty that a sale would have been made anyway.

Henry Ford broke the copyright of the motor car by showing differences /improvements of this motor car in comparison with the copyrighted motor car.

The anchor I made after trying to get the pattern of the spade anchor is quite different and I would never have purchased a true spade as it would not fit my bow rollers as the Rocna would also not fit.

If Rocna which to get a court order against me I wish then luck in the jurisdiction which would affect me as I don't think they would succeed.
