Now I've got your attention;)

I'd like to re-organise my cockpit lockers, which would involve switching my gas to the smaller locker. The problem is the 4.5kg butane bottle is just a nats too big. I think I only have three options.

1: Squeeze the butane bottle in the vice to alter it's girth :)
2: Don't bother changing things.
or
3: A camping gaz bottle fits just fine and I can get 2 in side by side.

Is their a great deal of difference between the Calor Gas and the Camping Gaz?

both are butane ( blue bottles)
the cost is more for gaz
gaz bottles you buy
calor you rent
nat = gnat

CG 907 (2.7 kg) & Calor 4.5 kg are same diameter base but Calor taller slightly.

The 4.5kg Calor butane bottle is 240mm diameter , x 340mm tall
the Camping gaz 907 bottle is only 205mm diameter x 245mm tall excluding a valve or regulator

There is no difference in the gas.

There is a substantial difference in the price

4.5kg Calor refill is £15.99 = £3.55 / kg

Gaz 907 refill full retail price is £25 = £9.09 /kg
(although can be obtained for £20)

They are quite a lot wider in the middle though. The 2.7 Gaz where I am costs £20 and the 4.5 calor is less (£18 I think), which makes the Gaz a lot more expensive. But if you don't use a lot it's not that big a deal in the grand scheme of things...

I don't know about you of course, but I find I use gas aboard much less nowadays, really only for breakfast & hot water into a flask for cup-a -soups en route, then eat in a pub etc in the evening.

That's for weekend trips, the gaz is used much more on holiday cruises.

As well as price, check availability ! Boats ( and camper vans ) I know have regulators for both Calor & Gaz, depending on the area / country, last I heard Gaz is a lot more available in France, in the UK can be pot luck.

As for fitting the bottle through the lid, would it be possible to fit one of the Henderson large inspection hatches into the cockpit deck ?

Beware also it really should be possible for any spilt gas from the bottle to drain overboard, or insurance could be tricky if anything nasty happened, though that would be the least of your worries !

I fitted a wooden box extending the bridgedeck, with plenty of ventilation, it turned out to make a useful extra seat and place to stow buckets, winch handles etc too, and reduces cockpit volume if mildly pooped.

The only alternative I could think of in my boat would be a glassed in bucket at the transom end of a cockpit locker, accessed from above by large inspection hatch, with a drain tube through the transom.
