Assuming it is a standard type of gear lever you just need to undo the grub screw, remove the lever and reposition it. The many splines make it possible to reposition neutral as necessary. In our case neutral is in line with the top right corner of the gear stick panel. i.e. about 20 degrees forward of vertical.

If you do adjust the lever so that neutral is not vertical (which for most people is the 'normal' position) it might be worth marking the neutral position so that if you have some one crewing for you who is not familiar with the boat they don't get confused - I have seen this done on charter boats. I piece of tape on the side of the cockpit outlining the neutral position is sufficent.

Move the gearbox end of the control cable one or more notches closer to the centre of rotation. Move the control end outboard to the most outer location. What you are doing is increasing the morse cable travel for a given handle throw.

BUT ..... does the lever really need to move that far to engage reverse or are you pushing it too far. If the box needs to go that far to engage then it may need rebuilding soon.
