Worked perfectly alright when I last used it two or three years ago but now having turned it on it took ages to acquire satellites & then when it says it is ready to navigate it obviously is'nt because the pointer is frozen & pointing in entirely the wrong direction.Anyone know why this should be & if it is repairable?

Usually takes an age to acquire a sat fix if it's been off for a long while or moved a distance. Try leaving it on for a while with fully charged batteries.

I'd do a factory reset (Setup. Menu, Reset) to clear all the old data.

It will take a long time to handshake with the Sats and re-acquire data..

I have deleted all the previous routes & tracks & checked out the system page under "setup"but can't find anything promising to frig around with.

Under "Units" it's set to "hddd mm.mmm'" as "Position FRMT"
MAP DATUM is WGS 84.
UNITS are Nautical
& North Ref=True & "Angle" is set to Degrees Does that sound right? Not sure what else I can do :confused:

Most Garmin devices, AFAIK, have a "hard reset" achieved by simultaneous pressing of several buttons during power-on.
It might also show a fault code, if any.
I'd try this, Google may give you the sequence for the Etrex or 'phone Garmin. They were very helpful when I once spoke to them, ages ago though, re. the millennium rollover.

There you go then!
The hard reset isn't normally referenced in user manuals, but it was necessary, as I mentioned, for Y2K, when the GPS system timing was re-based.

can you be a bit more specific as to which arrow and which screen please >

It may be that GoTo has been set to a default N position.

My eTrex manual doesn't give any hard reset option, but there are several versions of eTrex. The only reset options for mine is the "default" option at the bottom of the "units" screen.

However, Mr Google found this page : https://support.garmin.com/support/...caseId={dc0a1390-14a9-11de-76c5-000000000000}

Brilliant I can't thank you enough!I thought I was going to have to bin it.......being the sort of careless oaf I am I did'nt bother to back up the data so have wiped all my way points but all the signs are that it is navigating again.(I forgot all about them) Clot! Anyway it seems back on track so a big thankyou to all concerned. :)

Glad you have it working again, shame about the waypoints.
