Any recommendations for an engineer /mechanic in the Ipswich area. I'm after someone who can fix things rather than just replace them. I think I might need a top end job done on a Perkins Perama and the one bloke who has seen it said I need a new engine. It's only done about 500 hours!

Thanks in anticipation

Yes, interesting to know. Fox's did a lot to talk me out of fitting a new engine, they knew money was tight and thought they could fix it for an awful lot less, which they did. Their main concern was controlling the unknown costs, possible new engine beds, maybe dismantling the wheelhouse, new shaft and seal and so on. When they found a cracked stern tube we admitted defeat and stayed with the old lump which has run jolly well since. One day it will either pop a liner (wet ones on a Thornycroft) or cumulative ancillary failure will mean we raid the university fund to replace it. Though I think we did that for the new sails, I'll have to check ;)

Just an update on progress.
Obviously the new engine route was out of the question, so the head was taken off to be skimmed, and the valves, which were very corroded, were replaced, along with the head gasket. The original (you need a new engine) man seemed to be in the process of some kind of breakdown, so I got the guy from Kings at Pin Mill to do the work, and now everything is working just as it should. Happy Days!

No duffers allowed on Gus's patch!:encouragement:
Still don't know who it was that condemned it, could hazard a guess though

Was that Gerald?
Great guy, definitely not a "you need a new engine" chap. However he did tell me that if he did a complete overhaul of the 30 year old Volvo I would still have a 30 year old engine that might have another major problem before long!
He did superb job fitting the Beta 20 and We have been very pleased with it.
