It was a short one for this year but after delaying only one day we finally left from Msida Marina, Marsamxett Harbout Malta on the way to Scoglitti on the opposite South side of Sicily compass direction being 356 degrees.
After two days (Friday & Saturday) blowing a Force 5 with gusts of 6 the NW finally stopped on Sunday and Bella Vida (Gobbi 335 SC), Blu (Ferretti 40 Altura), and Ohani (Sunseeker 44 Manhattan) left for new discoveries up North. The 58 nm run had long high swells coming to the bow on the port side averaging 2 metres plus and touching 3 metres quite often for the first 50 miles. This reduced my usuall cruising to a couple of knots from 25 to a 21/22. As long as we leave and have a comfortable ride why one should argue.
Jusy as my previous Gobbi 27 Sport Perla Bianca first trip abroad back then in 1998 was also to Scolglitti which at the time it was a fishing village with some pontoons. Since purchasing and delivering Bella Vida in end July early August 2008 from Olbia this is her first trip abroad, and this where you really appreciate the boat....
http://www.pagineazzurre.com/italian/porto/id_sic080-z Scoglitti harbour was also very open to Westerlies back then which I experienced badly in 2001. You litterally see the bottom of the harbour when this came strong at the time. The harbour has finally been upgraded in 2009, and now pontoons are cropping out. Here you see full competition with the harbour which is still a fishing one, having four competing marinas as of next year. At the moment there is three, with only two having full services i.e. water and electricity. Saying that this is coming from a place where some say the Mafia was born is ironic. This often seen in many marinas in Sicily and South of Italy. I think if the harbour is goverment done, these type of concessions should be done. Not give a full monopoly to single body where this can raise the prices how much he wants. We have just experienced this in Gozo in Malta with prices going higher 400% since a private company took over the place.
Just to make it short we went in the old part called the Yachting Club payment was 35 EUROS per night for any size that means all the boats paid the same price whatever length you have. Altough boats over 50 feet will have problem coming to the inner part of the harbour. The only bad part is that so far electricity is not up to scratch that means no AC for any boats. Thank god the 3 days in the place where not so hot.
After 3 nights in Scoglitti we moved to this new marina to the SE of Scoglitti, Marina di Ragusa and was I speechless. www.portoturisticomarinadiragusa.it/en/ is so far the most high standard marina I have been too, and the town is nice and lively. Food is good altough Scoglitti is still just a notch up as to what regards fish. This marina is also massive offering 800 berths for boat of any sizes. There is some short nice anchoring areas altough all are for the most part quite open. I went to Donna Lucata 4 nm to the East as you can see in the picture which has some nice seas, and further Easterly about 15 nm is also nicer places with some nice rocks going high out of the water (like Capri style). I paid a not so bad 49 EUROS including a 10% dicount (standard 54eu) which was offered for boats residing over 3 days in the FerraAgosto week.
As the last picture shows we returned to Malta on the 15th. Can't wait for next year trip.
