MVS Event (inland Kent) August BH weekend

Pity we are in Burnham for the racing Martin, otherwise we would love to have come.
Hope the event goes well for you....

Cheers

It should be good, we will have some boats on display as well as other gear... We have high hopes, the population of Thanet is 125000 and people say about one in ten go supermarket shopping on a bank holiday Saturday! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I must say your powers of prose to describe what is going on at this event are a bit...well, umm, short.

At least give 'em a link to show what the MVS does.......

All IMHO of course /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

A good point! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

There are so many MVS members on here that I forget we are a semi-secret organisation. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

The Maritime Volunteer Service, under the national patronage of Prince Michael of Kent, operates a corps of uniformed women and men throughout the UK. Our aim is to maintain maritime tradition with formal training and hands on experience of all kinds of boats, while offering a well managed and coordinated service to the authorities.

Our event this weekend is a prelude to the dedication of our new boat - the MVS MASTERBREW which has been donated by Shepherd Neame and equiped by Malthouse Marine. We will have the usual array of training material and displays but mostly be improving our public profile.

The event is being hosted by the area's biggest supermarket and what should be one of their busiest days. A good chance for any forumites in the area to come along and say hello.

I've looked at the website previously, but it's not very clear exactly what they do. Bit like the Masons, you don't get to know what goes on until you've joined?

That is a fair point, there was a time back when the Service was funded by the Navy when they were pretty hush-hush. Some members still recall with fondness those days. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I have just added this to the Thanet site:

What does the MVS do?
We train and practice maritime skills and knowledge,
We offer those skills to the authorities.
We raise funds for equipment and facilities so that we can do the above.

[/ QUOTE ]

Is that a step in the right direction?

Okaydokay, some examples:

Assisted the MCA to maintain a watch over the wreck of the Napoli,
Helped Bristol City Council to inspect waterways access,
Helped Severn boat owners during flooding,
Helped Dorset Police with their Boatwatch scheme,
Assisted with various over-water airshows,
Helped out at various festivals of the sea etc,
Supported fisheries research.
Plus some quasi-commercial stuff like boat trips and safety boat 'jobs'.

Apologies to units that I have missed, this was mostly from memory! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

So, tell me you know have a vast understanding - if only so I can go and have a nice cold Friday beer?!

Still don't have a a clue what you do.

Not to mention the soggy footprints! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Sorry!

Any road up, we had a grand day today - what a scorcher! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

We got some great recruits, chatted to loads of peeps (thanks to the forumites who said hi) and raised some cash too. Very good indeed.

We even got an invite to have the Grand tour of Dover Coastguards catacombs. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
