We are hoping to go up to Lowestoft next week, and go in to the Waveney. Does anyone local know definitely if the lock is fully operational again? The Broads Authority website says normal service resumes today. The answer phone message on the lock phone still says "limited operation on Tuesdays & Wednesdays.

Secondly is it feasible to go up the Waveney towards Beccles in a yacht drawing 1.4m? An early Hamilton Broads "chart" seems to show good depths, but that was in the late 1970s.

We would like to visit the Waveney and the Yare for our summer cruise, but would settle for just the Yare if the Waveney is too shallow.

Hoping someone knows the answers.

From Broads Authority site yesterday

[Mutford Lock – Update 2nd June 2014

The repairs to the lock control system are now complete.

Following initial testing and training, normal operation will resume from Tuesday 3rd June.

Booking by arrangement with the Oulton Broad Yacht Station who can be contacted on tel:01502 574946, is essential to allow staff to manage the high demand expected and to allow for any adjustments as the new system settles.

Thanks, but I had seen that as I mentioned. However I was confused as if you ring the lock number you get the message I quoted, there was no reply from the Yacht Station, I left them a message on Monday but they have not called back.

Update,

I have just spoken to the Oulton Broad Yacht Station. They confirm that the lock is back in working order, and also that my draft should not present a problem, although " there are a few shallow spots" but that is true wherever we sail. :D

I took a Etap 26 to Beccles a few yrs ago , motored with keel raised so draught was about a meter , there is /was a shallow patch nr the Waveney river center wall and we couldn't get close enough to tie up there , the biggest hazard is all the hire boats .......

An update.
We have had a lovely week on the Waveney and are now back in Lowestoft waiting for slightly less wind to head up to Yarmouth to go into the Yare.
No depth problems except we were just aground a couple of times when moored up overnight.
