Well, with less than two weeks to go, I still have not purchased a sailing suit. There are a few reasons, so perhaps the community and clarify and help me decide on the best route.

Musto MPX offshore, best deal uk side £535. or should I look at the good old Olies.

I have not found any review of the musto MPX suit.

Also would I be best waiting until I get out to madeira or Spain before making a purchase.

Thanks

If you want anything other than the most basic "oilies", I would strongly recommend buying before you go to Spain etc. The available selection tends to be very poor plus the prices are eye-watering!
Fair winds.

We had Musto MPX and were very pleased with it, it's heavy duty and well made. From experience I don't think there is an equivalent, everything else is lighter. Bear in mind folding Gortex can damage it over time, it should be hung up as much as possible. Folding it is the main reason for complaints to Musto for losing water proofing.

My mpx race is still going strong after 7 years and a lot of use. It costs but it lasts. Warranty is pretty good even better on the hpx.

I bought my Henri Lloyd Offshore suit in 1995. It's a bit grubby now, but remains waterproof and warm, and I would have no need to consider buying new if I were to undertake more offshore travels.

You might do best here - once you've ploughed through the boutique gear.

I've always found Henri Lloyd rather more serviceable than either Musto or Douglas Gill.

Experience tells me that HL is fashion and not up to the mark when the weather arrives. Junked it for an MPX - made for sailing use not for the show!

Living near a Musto outlet helps!

Had a Musto MPX suit for over 10 years.
Trousers stopped being completely waterproof after about 7 years.
Both jacket and trousers started delaminating at 10 years.
They came with a 'lifetime' guarantee when I bought them.
Contacted Musto and requested either repair or replacement.
Was told that the 'lifetime' guarantee did in fact mean 10 years. :disgust:
To be fair: they did offer me a discount if I bought a new suit.

Did buy a Guy Cotton suit (4 years now) and very, very pleased with it.
Fishermen swear by Guy Cotton, so you know you're buying good stuff.

Thoroughly recommend it.

PS: bought mine at the Guy Cotton factory outlet in Concarneau (most stuff was the same price (or cheaper) than in the UK. Except the currency was diferent. Euros iso Sterling - a 20% saving, or more).

Our MPX kit is twenty years old and still going strong, the only way they can delaminate is if you fold them.

Guy salmon is the only game in town. Thousands of fishermen can't be wrong. Designed to be waterproof and big enough to put warm clothing under if cold.

I thought he sold Rolls Royce's on the Portsmouth Road at Thames Ditton.

OTOH, if it's Guy Cotton you are talking about there is a factory shop at Trégunc a few km from Concarneau. I got my suit there for €100.

Looked in wrong place then! Decathlon sports stores are fab. Waterproof breathable jackets, 40 euros, salopettes 38 euros. Have worn them for years.

Thanks.

Will order MPX today. :encouragement:

Before you do get to a 'designer retail outlet' similar to the one in south wales M4 near Bridgend. (McCarther Glen i think), really really cheap discounted prices. I purchased some racing shorts and sweater for 50% less than on-line prices...Bargain:)

Well, you can slap me later. Musto MPX set £450 all in, and they promise to accept returns if it does not fit. Yes I was worried about the Designer issue, but others here seem to recommend them, and at the price, I cant complain.

Bought Henri Lloyd suit at Toronto boat show for less than the best online discount price in UK!! Strange.
However my main point is that all this talk of 5 - 10 - 20 years life is of no real value as all depends on how much you use them and how you treat them. Only sailing full time for 5 or 6 months a year now I expect my gear will last more years than when it used to worn every day for 10 or 11 months per year.
