Conditions in Conwy must be ideal for Mussels. They have taken a real fancy to living inside my saildrive where they must get a nice flow of water to feed off. Unfortunately for me they are now restricting the flow of water through the drive and giving me a headache. Has anyone any suggestions for clearing them out and preventing them from taking up residence next year.

There is a thread in the Sailing Anarchy forum which talks about bypassing the cooling water intake with a seacock and filling the redundant waterways in the saildrive leg with oil to avoid internal corrosion.

Be wary posting on Sailing Anarchy, poor posters are eaten raw, not flamed. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I don't know about cleaning them out, but Conwy was once famous for its mussels and I doubt that they will go away by next year. Try moving around to the Straits, then you've only got the bl00dy weed to worry about /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hi Steve,
Come up to winter ashore at Fidlars Ferry. Go aground en route because of engine overheating due to Conway beasties up the water intake. Sit in the canal for a few months untill they all drop off.... worked for me!!
May see you next season!!
Regards

Condtions in Conwy and The Straits are ideal for said molluscs.
The only remedy for you is to beach Her/ lift Her/ Scrub Her/ whenever appropriate.
The fleet operating out of Port Penrhyn (Bangor) are making a bleedin fortune! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
The biggest opposition against the proposed Marina in Beaumaris comes from them the greedy gits.
I believe the "Quality" of the Conwy mussels are much desired.
It seems they desire your saildrive too! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Your not wrong!
Had a speedy boat moored in Menai Bridge for years.
Didn,t matter what type of antifoul I tried, "beard " grew round the water line in no time at all! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
Not so bad now I,m in the basin in PD.
Settling in the mud on Springs seems to keep the bum relativly clear of growth.
Then ther,es the problem of annode attack!
Yer can,t win! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If they are living in my saildrive would that make them my property? Maybe I could start farming them by getting a bigger saildrive. It sounds like I'm not going to beat them so I'll make the most of it. White wine and cream is the best recipe is it? Yum Yum!! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Cheers

That sounds like such a good idea I have to wonder why it isn't done that way. If there is only a seacock to deal with it would be much easier to keep clean and clear any blockages while afloat.

I'll give that some serious thought.

Thanks

Maybe there's money to be made - or a necklace for SWMBO.

Sounds like a faulous day out!

Are you returning to Fiddler's this year, Peter?
I'm in there now.

went sailing during the weekend of 7/8 october, with a few mates, and we ended up collecting a bucketful of mussels from a well known anchorage, and feasted on them for tea, a much welcome break to the usual tinned concoction, i normally dish up, washed down with a couple of bottles of wine, then the single malt whiskey.

A good weekend had by all....
and a bag of mussels to take home...
The best we have tasted for a long time....

Soon time to lift the boat out and scrub that beard off the boot top, also grows well up at the gazelle...

First boat I had hung on a mooring off The Gazelle.
Christ does Menai Weed grow quickley there!
Best recipie for the clinging Molluscs.
Stick em in a wok , lob white wine in ,cheap stuff will do, lob in some garlic, steam em (don,t cook em) till they open and scoff em!
Drink the wine, discuss tales of daring do , rough waters fighting off sharks(solicitors) Hairy passages (Girls of the night from Rhyl), Exciting moments (discount off Dickies) Rare occasions(Calm in The Irish Sea) Manx Kippers(reminds Me of The Girlfriends Knickers) So there you have it! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Telling tall tales after dinner is all very well, but 'discounts from Dickies' - come on, that's stretching credibility too far!

Yo! Graham it,s "Flat out" with Pizzas now.
Plus flogging a few motors ere and there!

Actually seem to have more time to mess about on here and mess about with the boat these days.
Cafe was very good in the Summer but a waste of sapace in the Winter!
See you round. cheers K!
