I mentioned to a friend recently that the forecast for next weekend was a little less apocalyptic.
'Of course', he nodded sagely, 'It's the winter solstice. Weather's always better either side of the solstice.'
'Eh? Really?'
'Ooh yes' he said 'It's a known fact, scientific...'

This was an educated man so I refrained from suggesting we sacrifice a member of the crew as well, just to be on the safe side. Then I thought nah..

Fact or fiction?

Well it's funny you should mention this but I came across a whole slew of these things on Simon's weather site some time ago. A Scot called Buchan, catalogued a whole list of "singularities" of (British) weather in the 19th century, and checking it here it definitely mentions the "mid December settled" (18th-24th, 56% of the time) in between the early December storms and the Christmas storm.

I tried to use it io plan this year's sailing holiday, though, and got the only week when it blew a hoolie in July.

Oh yes, "singlularities". These are fairly out of date now, although they do work occasionally and there are definate episodes in the year when climatic "turning points" can be identified. For example, the European Monsoon.
