Music on board

I think there are a few ideals.

It is useful to have a way of streaming music, be it from your phone to computer or stereo (wirelessly). Friends can then come on board and enjoy their music as well as yours.

A PC connected to the stereo is great. Obvioulsy lots of music can be stored and there are some good apps to manage and stream the music to the stereo.

Of course you need speakers in the cockpit as well as the saloon (and maybe the cabin(s)) and a means to switch between them or tunr them off.

Some form of remote volume control is always handy.

Agree with all that. It was a surprise that the technology had moved on so far that a separate remote control (not wired) is no longer available. Although I guess you could run a wired remote up to the wheel if you wanted.

My 5 year old Sony did the same thing late last year, so it was time for new and I found the same - no remote controls!!

Having had a bad experience with a new Sony TV, I had recently vowed to never buy Sony again, so I bought a Pioneer X78000DAB.

Like your Sony it has an App, (Pioneer ARC), which was good when it worked.... but it was hit and miss as to whether my phone would connect properly to it - it would partly connect, so I could play the phones music, but I couldn't connect to the radio controls.

I spent ages cursing it, getting up and down to change volume, station, etc., and was close to searching for anything, no matter how unknown, with a remote.

Then, one day, I happened to notice that my laptop was connected to the stereo by bluetooth.

I cant say for sure that my phone connected fine when the laptop wasn't on, but there is a strong chance. I think I've stopped the laptop connecting to the stereo automatically, and the phone app has connected correctly every time.

Having said that, I'm beginning to think we should have a dedicated phone to act as the stereo remote, as there is no guarantee that my phone will be nearby if SWMBO wants to change something, and vice versa.

I prefer a dedicated remote!!

Being a motorboat owner, it is absolutely necessary to own a very large installed speaker system. My system comprises of a Bose system which integrates to the ships PC to pay music from anywhere online, I normally use Spotify premium. Can also bluetooth phone, laptop, TV, etc to the system.

I didn't feel it was necessary to install speakers outside on the flybridge.

I have a Samsung soundbar, which runs from the batteries via a DC-DC converter, it has a remote control. It play sound from the TV screen via an optical cable and as the laptop is connected to the TV via an HDMI cable it will play anything from the laptop. The soundbar also has a Bluetooth connection, which allows me to listen to any radio station in the country via the radio player app on my phone. There is also an input that could be connected to a stereo via a 3.5mm jack

It has to be very big and very load to drown out the sound of the diesel being sucked through the fuel lines :)

Agree with the sound bar for the TV and also the need for a portable solution. The speakers we have sound good but I have been tempted to go to the next level. The stereo supports a sub-woofer.....surely not.... :)

This is the second change of stereo since we got our Moody four years ago. We like our music so hopefully there are some useful thoughts about features on stereos that work well on a boat.

If you want my honest opinion, I wouldn't waste any time installing a built in stereo on a boat anymore.

Bluetooth speakers have gotten so good that you can get one of these:

Set it on your chart table or in the cockpit and have better music quality than our fusion with built in speakers provides.

Plus it gives you the flexibility to take it with you if you're going to the beach.

Feed it with content from your laptop or cell phone. Add a satellite radio if you want live content.
