Music on board

I do remember thundering down towards the start line in an Army race in breezy weather with the Ride of the Valkyries blasting out of the speakers :)

I don't use the stereo all that often nowadays but it's nice to have the option.

Another memorable moment for us was when a good friend and his boat were sailing in company with us and the gaiter of his stern tube decided to pop off at about 05:00 in the North Channel. Her skipper spent an hour or so upside down in a hole in the cockpit sole trying to push it back on whilst his crew were pumping the bilge pump for all he was worth. The tide was sluicing us back southwards and I thought it appropriate to bring the ghetto blaster on deck and blast 'Oh what a beautiful morning' from Oklahoma at them at full volume as we circled around. Happy memories (for us).

I'm a big fan of Class T amplifiers. I have a few dotted around the house powering Kef in ceiling speakers. The power drain is so low I never turn them off (using Squeezebox as inputs). However, for the boat I use a FoxL speaker. Fairly expensive, (£130) but very, very small, low power, uses bluetooth or a jackplug, and has absolutely awesome sound! About the size of two iPhones stacked.

I have a Fusion system in my new boat, and early findings are excellent. The cockpit remote is very useful, and the cockpit speakers are powerful enough to create a stirring sound (obviously when other boats aren't around).

I know the sound of the wind and the waves should be enough.....! But, i was wondering if anybody has the solution to my needs?

I'm looking for a 12v (obviously) piece of kit that allows streaming of paired Bluetooth devices ie the ubiquitous IPhones and which can be remotely controlled from the cockpit. Ideally playing over cockpit speakers and will allow the VHF to interrupt for channel 16/disc etc monitoring. Radio facility ie FM

Anybody any thoughts?
Thanks

I bought a waterproof bluetooth speaker in Aldi here in Dublin last week. It cost €25. It charges by 12v connection and has a powerful output with solid sound. Similar to a Jawbone Jambox but less than half the price. Controlled from my phone I just move it to where I am. So far its great

I mostly like to listen to the wind and to the sea. But sometimes some music is appropriate. I remember an epic passage from West Bay to Poole in a F9, with winds over 50 knots at times, dead downwind under a scrap of headsail, flying along, surfing, spray flying. Mahler's 4th in the cockpit with some sound pressure! It was magical. I have a video.

For this an Alpine something or other, made to use an IPod as content source. iDA X100m, I think.

Sounds spectacular but not sure if it would have lightened the tension or heightened it !

Best ever sailing memory was when I spent a week with Ocean Youth Club (as it was then). Sailing one sunny day on the IJsselmeer and tacking hard all morning with Enya - "Sail Away" blasting from the deck speakers!! Happy times.

I well remember....

Two of us taking an Antigua catamaran round outside Ireland and down to La Coruna. Best part of a week aboard. There was one cassette tape ( ! ) on board, of Neil Diamond's 'Greatest Hits'.

He would play this, loud and incessantly, when he was on watch ( 50% of the time ).... and the speaker on 'my' side of the boat was about 3 feet from my ear'ole.

Even now, when I hear the opening notes of 'Cracklin' Rosie' I switch into Murder Someone Mode.....

I well remember....

Good speakers make a big difference and I can highly recommend Anthony Gallo Nucleus Micro. Very small but an amazing sound imo. Not cheap at £150 each but worth every penny if you have a decent amp (we use them with a Fusion and they work well). They can fill the boat with enough sound if you want but more importantly can play quietly with great definition.

I can highly recommend the Bose Soundlink mini, bluetooth and portable for around £140.
Lasts for absolutely hours on a charge, then just pop it in its charging cradle.
Fantastic big sound as usual from Bose.
