Not knowing a great deal about sailing yachts, in my boats engine compartment is an alloy finned looking box. On it is written 'Sure Power Industries, Multi Battery Isolator Model 1202'. Can anyone please tell me what this box does. It has what looks like 3 large red battery cables fixed to it.

thanks Paul

95% sure this simply supplies charging current from your alternator to three seperate batteries, whilst they remain isolated from each other, there is some voltage drop and hence heat created in the unit, hence the fins for cooling.

otherwis known as a splitting diode. it allows the alternator to charge 2 or more battery banks but prevents the stronger bank discharging into the weaker. generally needs to be used in conjunction with a smart regulator as some voltage is lost through the splitter and a self-regulated alternator won't produce enough voltage to fully charge the battery.
