Last week a man lets call him Mr Dog Walker went to rescue his dog from the Crouch mud. He, yes you guessed it was soon trapped himself. Fortunatly he had a mobile phone with him and was able to call 999. Otherwise he would certainly not have survived this ordeal in an isolated area. Eventually a policeman saved him after running for twenty minutes to locate the casualty. Mr Dog Walker was taken to hospital suffering from hypothermia and it was said he would not have lasted another 1/2 hour.
The casualty praised all who came to his rescue and said people should be warned of the danger. Now it is suggested that signs be put up all round the sea wall to tell people that River Mud is Dangerous Keep Out. but I guess dogs will continue to ignore it.
Fortunatly Mr Dog Walker has recovered but no news on the dog!

Stay Safe.

Idiot signs

The casualty should be told in no uncertain terms not to be so stupid next time, not put up signs. People must grow up and take responsibility for their actions.

A few years ago I saw a marvelous example of the Australian attitude to life. By a beautiful river pool, 50 miles from anywhere, there was a sign saying "Crocodiles regularly swim in this pool". There was no namby pamby "Danger, no swimming" sign. Australians are believed to be responsible for their own actions. Why aren't Brits?

Regards

Richard

Suppose a sign saying,
< Crocodiles lurk in the mud > should take care of it!

Re: Idiot signs

From the Darwin Awards :

Tourists from around the world visit the wild places of Australia, so open water is routinely posted with graphic warning signs to let people know that swimming with these dinosaur-like carnivores is not a good idea. The signs typically show a human figure between the jaws of a "saltie." The blunt graphic has proven so effective enough that there have been no crocodile-related deaths in the Northern Territories since 1998. At least, not until now.

Perhaps it was the full moon, or the warmth of the evening, that convinced a young German woman to go for a midnight swim. As usual, the billabong was clearly posted with toothy danger signs. The woman, a short-lived member of an adventure tour group, was about to get more adventure than than is generally advertised.

Police Commander Max Pope stated, "The warm night, the full moon, the billabong looked idyllic." But danger in the form of a 12 foot saltie lurked beneath the tranquility. The next morning, "the crocodile was located still holding the deceased. It was harpooned by wildlife officers."

There's a restaurant near us (in Hertfordshire) that used to be a watermill. Presumably to deter children, the stream has a notice "Beware of crocodiles". Wonder if it works?

Re: Idiot signs

why did they harpoon the poor croc, it did nothing wrong other than obey the rules of nature.....I despair of authorities sometimes.

<font color=blue>Sure! having got the taste for human flesh and learned that a human is defenceless it should have been allowed to live.

Re: Idiot signs

Shooting the croc is playing by their rules. Minor predator (croc) dies by lethal predator (human) hunting it.

What I can't get over is the lunatics on one of the alligator rivers in Northern Territories teaching crocs to jump straight up 8-10 ft out of the water to get food. Is that stupid or what? Makes a normal boat very vulnerable.

Not if the boat is full of loss-adjusters and insurance salesmen... (see later post)
