Can you have a look and see which way the flanges face?:)

I and no one else on here actually knows what you mean by the flanges, as said take a look on any volvopenta dealer website for the parts drawings, or let me have a better detail of what you mean by flanges, what have you actually done to the gearbox?

I ordered the new O rings for the raw water connections on my MS4 gearbox, but failed to notice that the flanges (part number 854184 ) have different faces on either side,
one side is bevelled and the other has a machined recess,
can you tell me which side is supposed to face the gearbox as they go on either way?

Ah I know exactly what your talking about now, the cooling water pipes ???? Yes!!!!

If you get it wrong ou can end up with sea water in your box,

Right, the bevel side goes to the gearbox casing , fit now o rings and apply a bit of rubber sealant to make sure you get a good seal, the bevel face squashes the o ring and makes a seal between the brass housing and the pipe that sticks out of the box, ie the cooler coil pipe, the pipes that supply have a square type seal over the flared end of the pipe, again use a new seal, make sure it's pressed on to fit the pipe end as it sits in the recess of the brass flange, tighten the 10mm headed bolts equally to squash the pipe into the flange.
