I started my engine (D2-55) today and put it in gear. It was a bit stiff but after a few months lay up I thought it was just the cable. But when I tried to return it to neutral it didn't want to play. I had to stop the engine to disengage it. Ditto with the stern gear.
I disconnected the cable from the gearbox and tried again directly. Same problem - once in gear it wouldn't come out of gear.
The gearbox is 18 months old. (Out of guarantee!!) Oil looks OK (using Volvo Penta's recommended oil).
It's done about 350 hours.
There is no problem going in and out of gear when the engine isn't running.
Also no problem in turning the prop when in forward or reverse gear. The boat moves ahead / astern normally.
Any thoughts? I'll have to get a local Volvo Penta man but would like to have some ideas as to what might be wrong so that I can have a sensible conversation with him.
Thanks.
