Mr Morse and his code, especially S and O

Do we know whether the concept of 'save our souls' pre-dates Mr Morse's alphabetydottydashy code? Is it by chance letters S and O are in a way similar, easy to hear, read and remember is it all chance? And if we didn't have SOS now what politicallty correct code would now have? HELP comes to mind but that's just too dotty: .... . .-.. .--.
