Hi

We currently have a Freeman 26 that is moored on the Thames but we shall be moving up North early next year. Can anyone suggest any Freeman friendly waterways in the Cheshire area. The Dee and Weaver seem to be fairly navigable but there must be others...the boat has a 2' 5"ft dr and 9' 10" beam. Any information, web links etc. would be appreciated

Thanks in advance
Rob

Dont really understand what you are looking for but dont forget the Mersey. It's nowhere near as bad as is made out and is now the prime cod fishing area in the North. have a look at the marina

Yes, interesting that. I was stood outside the pierhead buildings chatting to some lads with fishing rods. When I asked them what they were fishing for, they said cod!!

A sign of improving times for our rivers.

Can certainly suggest the Lancaster Canal, which is known as the "home of the Freeman's" cos virtually every other boat is a Freeman ! obviously not in Cheshire, but because its such a lovely wide beam canal, 40 miles lock free, unless you drop down 6 locks to glasson dock, which is a nice trip, lots of boat owners travel quite a distance to be on the "lanky".

At 9'6 you will need a wide beam canal, which narrows your choice of canal, as the Macclesfield and Peak Forest canals are narrow, but in Cheshire.

Otherwise the Leeds Liverpool canal is wide beam, and the yorkshire canals are too.

There are lots of facilities for Freeman's on the Lancaster canal naturally as there are so many, suggest you take a trip to Garstang & have a look, can give you directions to the main "freeman" marina if you want. Also suggest you get yourself a Nickholson's guide to the north west canals, you will need a couple to cover all the canals I have mentioned.

Chester looks like a really nice place to keep a boat, lots of places to go from there.

Some pics from the Lancaster canal, our next door neighbor's on their Freeman, and a view from just outside garstang. You can get from the mentioned Bridgewater canal onto the Lancaster via the rufford branch & via the new ribblelink
and v.v. so plenty of places to go.

Nah
You dont want to be doing ditch crawling. What you need is a lake, Windermere for example. Soon get bored going round and round but hey there's loads of pubs, restaurants, shops etc. And once your anchored in the summer with a bottle of vino you could'nt be in a better place in the world. Apart from SoF, Costas etc. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

any sort of boating is good, don't knock ditch crawling, & more pub's per mile than windermere & as you say windermere's all about going round in circles !

Sea boating's good too, but moorings can be a hassle, other boaters wait till your all tied up alongside, then say "oh by the way we are leaving at 5am" Ditchcrawling you get your own bit of bank till you decide to go.

I was actually rather impressed when I followed that link I gave above with regards to the Bridgewater Canal, some lovely places to go from there, I could imagine quite enjoying spending some time on canals and exploring the country at 4kts.

Not for too long though....
