Hi all

I'm thinking about moving Take Five from Brighton to Shoreham this season - the move is entirely in order to save money so that I can actually have some free time to sail - or rather to work on her.

Anybody got any feelings about Shoreham as home port for a 30' long, 6' draught fin keeler with slightly scruffy topsides?

Sounds as though you'd fit right alongside us in Shoreham, except that we're only 5' 1" draught, and our scruffy topsides are currently being repainted (hurray!). Have you got a space or gone on a waiting list?

We like Shoreham, don't we, Janie? However he may be confined by draft at springs low tide an hour either side of LW. Other than that, can lock in and out on the hour with the rest of us.

The chimney kicks out a bit of dirt - not corrosive, just have to wash your boat more often, or go for more wet windy beats.

I have heard of an electrolysis issue, whether it is true on not I don't know, as I have seen no evidence of it. Due, I am told, to the dead mooring chains and other scrap in the harbour. So I would be careful with an aluminium boat - but who has one of those, apart from Erika? Normal anode maintainance is sufficient, for the rest.

There are good facilities/shopping/pubs/railway in walking distance.

The YC showers are ok, but you'll need to be a member (which is a good idea anyway). Riverside has no showers, the Lady Bee's are scummy. Sorry Graham, but it's true. Aldrington has a fairly modern toilet block. Nicholsons has nothing like that at all.

At present, Shoreham Lock is funky and practical... there are big plans for redevelopment though, but we are not holding our breath. It will be chaos while they go ahead, and when completed, there will be many more berths (but no extra locking), all will be posh, and probably more expensive, though I fail to see how the Lady Bee can put her prices much higher.

Come to Shoreham, David!

Hi Clouty

There can't be many Clouts in Shoreham and my best guess is that I dropped my genoa and sail cover off for some repairs at your place last night!

I've found a mooring between the piles at Riverside, and I'll be moving there in May when my conbtract at Brighton runs out.

Hi Janie

It'll be nice to feel like we fit in at Shoreham, Every time I go down the marina at Brighton I have a vague feeling of being the poor person staying at a swanky hotel.

How old and what is your 30 footer, so I can look out? You must have seen the boats at Riverside, so you should know you'll fit right in!

Hi Janie

She's a 1978 Ron Holland Golden Shamrock- white topsides with a red stripe and faded cream deck and coachroof. Black mast, red going pink sail covers and spray hood.

I was planning to repaint the topsides this winter and I got as far as sanding the starboard side before the weather turned nasty and work got busy. Now I'm just trying to sort out the excessively weepy sterngland and trying to fix the heads before she goes back in the water in two weeks. The paint will have to wait another season.

See you in the spring - all going well.
