Bit fed up with south coast marina prices, I'm thinking of moving the boat to northern france next season; probably north coast of Brittany and then maybe round to the south coast the following year. Question is: where?

The ideal place would have a secure marina with good transport links to Gatwick airport (as I live next door). Stanstead would be second choice. I think the ferry links just take too long to be practicable.

After much internet research, I've concluded that St Malo is probably the easiest to get to. Trouble is, I can't find any information on the internet about tariffs. Lezardrieux would be my favourite, but I can't find a sensible way to get there.

Any ideas on location and travel? Also, any info on St Malo would be much appreciated.

Keep mine in Calais, mainly because it it easy to get to. Best run from Oxford to the boat 3 hours 15.
You need to think about the ease of getting to the boat if it becomes a hassle it puts you off going. It nice to be able to go on a day return just to check the boat over the winter months.
The only down side is you tend to put on weight because of the eating out and wine

Is there not generally pressure on berths in the SoF? A friend wants to put a boat into Port de Bormes, the only way is to buy a boat already on a berth, there are no free ones available!

The cost of the berth is not far off the UK South coast prices either. Mind you, I have to agree, beyond those constraints there is no comparison, the sailing is superb.

Thanks for that. I take it you go via the Dover to Calais ferry?

Depends on when I go.
day trip = ferry dover calais
48 hour weekend = tunnel
longer = speed ferries (block booked ticket £42 return anytime)

Cost of the berth 8m £500 a year inc elc and water /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

At present there are not many annual berths available anywhere in Brittany. Some marinas may put you on a monthly contract until an annual one becomes available.

Have a look at Brest. You have Ryanair Luton-Brest. They are also offering Bournemouth-Nantes.

Or you could try Dunkirk. 5 marinas some approached thro a lock but excellent facilities. cost me £470 fo 10m boat. 30 - 40 mins to open sea and regular lock opening.
Ferry (2 hrs) from Dover to Dunkirk at 2 hour intervals 24/7

This really is ridiculous, how do the Marinas in France do it???
In the South of France it costs me £1300 incl. water & elec..

Why do we put up with stupid prices here in the South West
I would like the opportunity to bring my 10m yacht back here but what are we talking about in a south west Marina... 4 or 5k PA. & that's after my salary has been taxed, so I would have to earn roughly another 6.5k just to park the boat!!!

I know all the arguments re land prices etc. etc. but the French are boating friendly, yet on an island we are not - how come?

rip off.
