My small Sigmar stove is working well - blasting out heat. Most of it, though, stays in the upper 18" of the cabin. I am looking for a fan to move this about a bit and was a bit surprised at the price of Hella fans. Why? What have they got that a cheap ebay offering doesn't have? Long life? Silence? Power consumption?

Hopefully you will get get plenty of useful suggestions. We use a fan from a PC. There are lots available, some quite big and designed to be quiet. Ours has been onbaord 5 years, with no faults.

Suggest you get one of these if you haven't already done so.

Yes, of course I have a co detector. But with the heater being in for a few months it hasn't shown a count above 0, so I think it is well installed and safe.

But that advice is not exactly - to say the least - what I was looking for when I asked for info on why Hella fans are so expensive.

They are expensive because they are very robust and quiet for their power.

Like anything, I guess is worth what people are willing to pay for it. We have Hella and they are very good. Didn't really do much of a comparison though.

I once had a house that had electric heating installed in the ceilings. Never did work out how to get the heat to go down. We ripped it out instead. :D

Many years ago I was taught how to sauna by some lovely people from Sweden. In order to keep the temprature even in the sauna (in their case BL**DY hot) they whizzed a towel round. Cheap, quiet and reliable (and rather exciting if done by a naked Swedish lady). :D

I once worked to a company that supplied industrial fans to move the hot air in the roof of high bay factories.

The trick is to have a slow speed fan of a largish diameter for best efficiency.

Most fans are designed for cooling thus highish speed to get high air flow.

Yes, I've been using a towel which is easier to get with my age and looks than Scandanavians. But you have to get up from the book every now and then to do it ...

Where is the Sigmar located? The reason I ask is that I installed a Taylor's paraffin heater in the oilskin locker of my boat (the only place with room for it) and I would like to stir the air around the cabin , so I'd be interested in the suggestions received.

A slow-speed fan seems a good idea to me because it would be quiet and I could cut a hole for it in the the bulkhead between the oilskin locker and the main cabin. Also it wouldn't want to be too powerful in case it drew fumes from the burner instead of them going up the chimney.

It's in the main cabin almost under the mast - plenty of room. I wouldn't be too keen in cutting holes in the bulkhead because the mast is deck stepped. It would have to be a very, very strong fan to bring fumes down the burner, so I think I am safe there.

No-one has really strongly defended Hella and their prices - so I'll pop into Maplins this afternoon and have a look at what's available. Demountable is my goal - whether a pc fan or something else, we'll see. I think all I need is something to blow down from around above the heater.

Thanks for the info (even the co monitor advice ...)

I have s/h high quality (ex server or old mainframe kit) 24V 8" fans running at 12V. Possiblye more reliable than PC fans and easier to fit 'cos they have a solid aluminium case.

They move a lot of air .....
Used to be loads at "computer fairs"
