moving a boat with out the aid of water .

Re: Trailers ....

Now im thinking along the lines of a trailer what the law say about leaving a trailer and boat on the road ? does it need to be taxed etc ?

Re: Trailers .... what have I started ???????

Seeing as many people leave caravans etc. on roads outside houses - I also know of some who were told to move them by local authorities ...

I think most depends on neighbours and location ... is it a cul-de-sac and no obstruction etc.

As to legal aspect of Tax etc. ???? no idea - but I would suspect that you may have a problem there. And as regards insurance ... if hitched to car - that is sorted. Unhitched ???? But you would list it on your boat ins.

Find a friendly farmer to let you put it out of way ??? You could always turn it on its side blocked up so wheels are free of ground ?

I moved a twister from Yorkshire to Scotland a few years ago. I bought a large furnish van from a scrap yard for £200 and removed the top then its just a trailer chasse like any other trailer I bolted a cradle on through the steel of course, and it was no problem hiring a unit to move it I then sold it for £400 for another boat removel try bedding firms they dispose of vans all the time. Will solve your trailer problem.

I don't think it will be a problem for very long.

Just make sure your theft insurance is up to date. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: Trailers .... what have I started ???????

There is land where im moored with old rotting boats on chocks but its another bill that i would like to avoid , although i dont know of the costs of that yet . Maybe worth a look . But then its not close to my workshop where all the work on the inside would be done in no time and with ease .
A few years ago when i was doing loft conversions we used to hire a crane for the morning for £150 to get the steels into the roof area , i wonder if it would be the same to crane a boat into the back garden so closer to the workshop and out of everyones way .

Re: Trailers .... what have I started ???????

There's nothing to stop the boat being lifted with trailer ..... so you have best of both worlds.

I recently moved my 30ft yacht a short distance by road for £150. The lorry was equiped with a HIAB crane which lifted it on and off OK. Lorry had to be parked alongside where the boat was going to sit but worth contacting local companies (I used a crane hire and haulage company who seem quite used to this sort of thing.

Re: Back to the boat

I think in seeing the price of second hand trailers thats the way to go . Not to keen on the cut up a van approach because like i said im no good with metal things .
As for the boat itself its classed here again as a high speed sea cruiser . Now ive only pottered around the thames so i know nothing about sea cruisers other than what ive seen on here etc .
The plan is to get a boat that will go to sea and this one will spread the costs if i do it up over time . Are the old seamasters good sea boats ?

Re: Trailers .... what have I started ???????

Ive looked for a trailor to rent and called and emailed companies but there are no trailor rentals and only big boats are moved by companies.

I looked everywhere for someone to move me from Port StLois to Lyon or as i said to Paris Le Haver or anywhere in between and at any time up to June and i asked in Febuary and March Nothing.

I have a boat that can be moved by trailor but i dont have one!!If you want to be moved you will have to buy a trailor and a car to do it!!

It seems to me silly that theres no one at all out there that will move a boat that together with trailor dosent excede 3 tons a full half ton under the allowed non commercial weight!!

Instead of staying with my girl friend enjoying the town i have to go into the cold bay of Biscay then North sea where the wind can blow the sea can be rough and it can be cold an wet!Just to be able to enjoy a freezing wet lonly summer in the baltic.

If only there was someone that rented trailors or would move a small boat,If you have a big boat no problem, you should have heard the dissapointment in the voice of a company when i told him i had a folkboat! He wanted someone that would pay telephone numbers!

Seamarsters are very very good boats well built and their sailing range good sea boats.I wouldent think there MOBO range wasent first class as well ask in the MOBO section

Re: Back to the boat

It looks like a worthwhile project, but I think your cheapest option is to buy a secondhand trailer. It has got to be cheaper than buying a set of heavy duty boats stands and cranage twice, once at the start of the project and again at the end.

But not only that, if you need to take boat to have some work carried out, you can move it.

Re: Back to the boat

If walking or swimming next to one it could be described as high speed /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
great river and estuary boats ,well built and great accommodation for two

cheers Joe

Re: Back to the boat

True and it would also save me costs on Cuchilo as she also would fit on the trailer for antifouling etc .
But i want a sea going boat and Cuchilo as lovely as she is , is a canal / river cruiser . Plus i seem to get bored on a boat when there is nothing to fix .

Re: Back to the boat

The link wasnt to the project thats just what i googled about them . The one im talking about is [--word removed--]but afloat /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: Back to the boat

I see. Still, it's a sturdy looking craft. But as jkay pointed out, is it High Speed?

Do you have any performance data for the size of engine?

Re: Back to the boat

Nope its a [--word removed--] boat for very little money and the inboard is in bits . Maybe a chance to upgrade it if needed ?
There was a very angry goose aboard when i went to look , in fact two of them ! So i didnt get to look around too much /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Sorry , missed the post , Trevera is currently jacked up off her trailer , she's 25ft Birchy , if you want to borrow the trailer it's yours . Can't say for certain if it will take the weight , but if you want to try it , you're welcome , trevera is currently jacked up onto piles of pallets with the trailer underneath , but I can soon pull it free . Offers there
