fwiw,

Bit of a follow on from your 're-prop' question for moving to med.

We did the move in Spring 08 - VP ad41b's and dpa duo's.

My thoughts / experiences for prepping the boat prior would be :-

Leg / sterngear Fouling : As discussed with the much higher temps and sun med fouling / barnacles are pretty aggressive. The standard 'Int Trilux' (general uk version) for sterngear in Med works very poor - discovered though that a 'Med Strength' version is also available in Mallorca ! Alarming rate of fouling initially and had to lift within a few months and then reapplied with the 'med strength' version which now works pretty well.
Hull antifoul : Did a fresh 'awl gold' antifoul just prior to transport out. Very poor results within two months with barnacles starting all over even with regular use at speed. Re-antifouled with 'Titan' (colour black) (as recommended by locals) and results very very satisfactory. Now about to lift end October after 12 months on same application - only small fouling to stern (in direct sun at berth) and very minor small bits at waterline towards stern.
Props / ss trim tabs fouling : No answers really - even with all the wonder paints - apart from get a proper multi angled scaper and pack your mask & snorkel. Generally I do a prop / tt scrape monthly when at anchor - or lift the legs and do the props in the marina. Did the t/t with primer and then Titan in spring which has just fallen off in lumps.
Power : Not felt any really changes apart from the alarming results of rapid fouling (mainly props & tt ). I do think that when your fully over onto white diesel you should see much less smoke and I feel power is un-changed or even improved !
Anodes : Seems for us that it is possible to get a year out of anodes but after six months some of the anodes are getting a little burnt out so regular checking is needed. We have a galv iso / no air con and try to turn shorepower off when absent.
Sun shades : Consider perhaps getting made up some white sun shades / bimini for above and sides - will be probably cheaper and easier to source in UK. Ikea are now doing some large 'garden' sun canopies - bit like lightweight big white sheets with eyelets and tabs - in triangle (bow) and rectangle shapes - recommended. On special at £10 last month due to overstocking for UK 09 heatwave !

So strongly suggest you perhaps consider 'med strength' antifouling prior or on arrival as the critters are waiting for your boat /sterngear as you read this post !

PS - apart from above (now basically resolved) absolutely no regrets on moving

Richard - very useful post for anyone contemplating a med-move.

(Glad you're enjoying yourselves out there - are you really saying it's better than the Humber? I can't believe that...;) )

I've been in Mallorca 5 seasons and I've found nothing that stops the barnacle critters from taking up residence on props and sterngear. I've tried Propspeed and Velox Plus on the props but neither adhered long enough to provide season long protection. I am resigned to paying a diver 4 or 5 times per season to clean the sterngear. In contrast the Titan Medium antifoul that I use on the hull works pretty well and will even last 2 seasons

Thanks to you all,
some very usefull info,i was going to ask about the fouling problem at a later date so thanks for that.
As i have duoprops it should i hope be quite easy to keep them clean as they can be reached from the bathing platform.
As a side issue i have noticed that my antifoul paint (v c offshore) doesn't seem to be working very well at all this year, for the first time ever i am getting growth on the hull, has anyone else noticed this, regards mm1.

Hi carlton,
We were over in Hull Marina for the Clipper weekend - the memories came flooding back when we were locking out and the gates opened. Needed two weeks and a trip back to Mallorca to thaw out after 6 hours on the Humber.
