Our annual Round the Island Race kicks off today - not quite on the same scale as the Race around the Isle of Wight (30 odd entries so far, as opposed to almost 2,000 for the one in high latitudes), but it will still no doubt be keenly contested.

And the overall winner will receive a keg of rum the same weight as their skipper - so take note for future reference, all of you racing skippers who are not exactly anorexic - you could do well here next year! :D

More about the Race here : http://www.mountgayrumroundbarbadosrace.com/

And there is a live tracker as well for all the participants : http://yb.tl/mgr2013

Idea (a 78' Maxi) is back again - she currently holds the monohull course record last year of approx 5 hours I think, for about 70 miles. Sounds good, until you see that the multihull record is faster, and currently held I think by Silver Bullet, which looks like an oversized 30' Tornado cat.

I crewed on Idea on her delivery back to England last summer - thread about that trip here - http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?t=316933&page=5 )

I am not sailing in the RTI, but I shall enjoy following it on the computer later on.

Sorry Di, I just had to revert with this - for anybody on Facebook, there is a very nice set of photos of participants (and all sorts of other happenings) by Andre Williams here - http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.4314780187204.2149074.1217915690&type=3

I was watching the boats from a nice vantage point on top of a cliff on the NW side of the island as they came beating around the top, and then trundled off home (I live on the east coast) and was watching with binocs out the window, and comparing the positions on the tracker on the Mount Gay website.

Maybe next year we will take part...... we tagged along 2 years ago unofficially on my pal's Jeanneau SO 40 and enjoyed it hugely.

Nice pictures! And thanks for letting us know about the RTI. It's nice that they publish the results on their website, our club does that too. I'm still trying to find the Round Antigua official results from last weekend!

..sigh.... I was happy - now I have the winter blues back :( I love Barbados, never sailed there though - great photos - looks fabulous & some interesting manoeuvres....
