Hi I would like to know if (in the Moulsford part of the Thames) am I allowed to anchor in the middle of the Thames and fish day and night?
Regards Trevor

AI answer

Anchoring on the Upper Thames is generally not encouraged. While the Environment Agency bylaws allow it provided it doesn't obstruct the channel, it's not a popular practice. There are designated moorings at intervals, and it's best to use those, especially at popular spots. If you do choose to anchor, ensure you have a large enough anchor for the river flow and don't obstruct the channel.
Here's a more detailed look:
1. Regulations and Best Practices:
Obstructing the Channel:
Avoid anchoring in ways that interfere with navigation or other boat traffic.

Being in the middle, you are obstructing the channel

Try Thames forum but short answer is yes.

Providing you can be seen and not obstructing navigation.

Given the state of the Thames at present there will be absolutely nobody to tell you to move !

Hi, I'd like to fish in the middle so all traffic can continue both sides of me ,I've all the correct nav lights, casting from the side Mooring means I would be crossing traffic were as I would carst straight down the middle with the flow of the water, I will not be trawling.

You are obstructing the channel if you anchor in the middle. No one anchors in the middle of the upper Thames. Even with anchor lights it may not be obvious to other traffic

Have you got a black ball
You'd be lucky if anybody knew what a black ball is up there, the issue will be small launches coming back from the pub, legally you can only anchor outside of the middle third. But again nobody will tell you off, only the judge in the court case after the 6 drunks in an open launch have drowned after colliding with you in the dark.

OK excellent, I 🐚 make sure I'm well out of the way whilst anchored
Thanks for your advice

Thank you gentlemen for all your advice, I'm looking forward to boating in our new location in moulsford, having just moved up here from temple mill island, just west of marlow.

Just settled in, just up from the " beetle and wedge " we love it here, now I'm after a nice little hard bottom tender, to stand in so I can get around to the other side ot my boat, any one know of one up for sale ?
Kind regards Trevor.
