Now - everyone has been going on about people not getting on and quotes like "ouch" and "oooooorrr" keep appearing. So why has no one had a pot shot at Motor sailers. Are they on both sides or neither ???????

Why should we have a go at anyone who has a boat unless they are a nuisance to others or just plain obnoxious. There are good and bad motor sailors (boats that is) just as there are good and bad motor boats and sailing boats. I think many sailors consider them to be too unresponsive under sail and from our side too slow and unwieldy compared to most stink pots.

However the thought of a sail as a back up does appeal, and to cruise and hear only the splash of water against the hull must be good.

I once went to the boat show, looking for a motor sailer . And was very soon told. " Yer in this camp err that, half way dont work."

I could not give a dam what sort of boat yerv got.

But I get quickly put in my place, on my frequent visits to the Solent.

When expertly fitting 40 ft boat in 41 ft gap. The saily boats crew all jumping around, fingers to nose and panicking like buggery. Like you cant do this without twenty people running round bersurk, fending and more fending and scrunching and sounds like errrrrekectshum, from hull . They dont half get ofended by a slight brumff from one engine, and a little , erumf from tother. Now nicely in place.

My perfect boat would be a twin engined planing saily boat.
It would do all things for all men, and do them at a drop of a hat. Do it cheaply and do it well. Now find me that boat and I dont give a f----- what you call
it. thats what I want!!

Haydn, you is jest a plain olfashund boy - what you really want is a nice flying boat, something like a Catilina, OH sorry! forgot you aren't that fond of American things, how about a nice Saunders Roe Princess......now that would really get up Byrons nose, wouldn't it?

Re Princess Lord Mountbatton

Now your talking.
So what I want is two big V belts from the prop shafts, up to the fly bridge, and a couple of extra big propelors attatched. Then with a couple of wings mounted on the gunals, with wires attatched to the fly bridge. Cos they always have wires all over the place.

There should be plenty of spare parts lying around, cos the boats berthed at RAF Mountbatton, the old sea plane station in Plymouth. Then theres the comando place, about 30 yards away, so there should be some good stuff there worth nicking.

Thats it. Princess Lord Mountbaton.

What speed do you think I need across the sound, to get airbourn and is there anything special I need to know if I do?

Will the chart plotter work at 20,000 feet.
Should the auto pilot be adjusted in any way.
Do you think that the trim tabs will do as airalons ( Spell checker cant find the bloody things) or will I need to tape some cardboard to them to increase the size?

I think Matts wife is the expert on flying around here.

Dont see why not. and I,ve got rudders. Not much needed except the wings. Only other thing needed is one of those trolly things that they push down the middle, and some plastic knives and forks.

All comments about you not being a proper pirate having no black spots are retracted. It is rare that such words of wisdom are read on any of the forums. Claymore is a motorsailor - she lives in Scotland where it has been known to rain - she keeps us dry when others don't, she grants us the pleasure and peace of sailing without engine, and when there is no wind - she is happy to motor.
