Next yr I am planning on spending a year or so cruising the med in a 35ft twin diesel Fairline Targa. I have budgeted about 15k for the period to include food, diesel mooring etc.

I am trying to work out a route from Alicante. As most of the posts on here refer to sailing the Med, how many have done it in a similar craft to the above and what tips would you have for making the money last a little longer and tips for places to go.

I have calculated that on about 27p per litre of diesel I would be able to get about 12,000nm from about £7,500. Does this seem realistic? or are my calculations completely out the window.
Do most places accept card or am I better off with a fistful of euros to pay for fuel / moorings at the marinas.

If anyone else has done this on a similar budget I would be interested in hearing about how far you got before running out of money, how long did you manage to stay away and top tips for living on a budget.

Please feel free to refer me to previous postings if this has already been covered.

I have bombed around the med in a targa and other motorboats. Diesel is around at least .8 of a euro in s france, .9 in corsica, making it at least 50 p. Also, i think you are optimistic of fuel usage, perhaps?

Anchoring out, away from expensive marinas wil save loads and loads of loot, and it's fab to wake up and jump in instead of schlep around to marina offices.

Anchoring out also means that you stay out of the way of chandlery shops, alweays an expensive visit. Anchoring out isn't an option in gales, so important to get in- don't ask on vhf, just drive in and find a space. Summer can be more than double the price of winter berths.

Anchorwise, bigger is better. You need a decent kedge (rear) anchor to allow you to align yerself straight out into the waves. And long biots of rope to tie on to a yellow buoy instead of the kedge, not permitted but what the hell overnight.

Most places will accept cards (not the fuel berth at menorca, or ourd didn't work any) so good idea to hide 1000 euros somewhere.

VAT is higher, so any spares would be cheap in cash. In spain they speak english . In france you ask "esct-ce qu'il faut le regularisé?" and offer cash, but no difference on fuel and anyway they ain't the boss.

Other money saving ideas include erm not getting lashed all day and all night, not going too far in the boat, not blamming it which will use more diesel and might bust the engine, eating tons of bread at breakfast to avoid hunger late in the day, avoiding the more expensive restaurants in south of france, staying in cheaper spanish cruising areas, being in greece (but quite a long way away), and not inviting any pisshead/ foodloving mates on board or at least not giving them any food/drink, even if they turn up with food/drink themselves.

Unfortunately, I didn't do any of the above, and hence burned up 10 blimmin grand in two weeks.
