We took our 38 footer down last year and thorougly enjoyed (most of ) the experience. The route we took is generally considered to be the Bourbonnais route i.e. From Le Havre up the Seine through Paris to St Mamme, then into the canal sytem, canals du loing, lateral a loire, centre, and some others i would need to check up on, then into the R. Saone at Chalons sur Saone and then the Rhone down to Port St.Louis.
You need ICC with CEVNI endorsement and a vignette (licence) available from the VNF. Vois Navigable de France ( waterway authorities.)
Happy to share any details when you get nearer the off. We took 3 months to do it at leisure but you could do it in a month or 3 years as you prefer! Read "Through the French Canals" by David Jefferson. Pub Adlard Coles to get you started.

We came down to the Med round the outside (Biscay) two years ago and would be happy to share info.
