Peter, when I was in Holland 2 years ago, I witnessed a german boat that was so determined to be out of the lock first that as soon as the lock gates were open enough he charged out - but forgot about the lifting bridge immediately beyond the gates and came to an abrupt halt as his forestay hit the bridge! The whole lock roared with laughter.
