Sorry to reopen old wounds. All the mags have attempted to ensure that courtesy on the high seas exist between sail and motor. THis includes giving sail a wide berth when motoring in order to minimize effects of wash etc.

I wonder why the pilot boats at Harwich think it is professional to charge around at warp factor eight within arms reach, cutting across intended tracks spilling wind from sails and sending chattels in all directions below.

Should we not be able to expect a better example from professionals?

They are woking for a living and therefore have right of way. You are enjoying yourself and therefore dont warrant consideration.

Same with some lorry drivers, taxis, big ships etc.

The pilot boats at Cherbourg were clearly waiting until they'd passed the boats anchored outside the marina before gunning it. Could here them throttling up once they were well past. It certainly made things less rolly /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

No problems at all with the Harwich pilots (my home sailing water).

They have always given me loads of sea room and often eased down to pass.

Unlike some local mobo-ers, I may say. (And before anyone starts, I was and still am a mobo-er myself, so I'm not some 'raggy twit' who just doesn't understand).

[Thinks... There, that should get things going... Now, how do I post this is the mobo room?]

Your Harwich pilots have mates in Pompey it seems. They're always in a hurry, partic when coming back home!

Quite right! At the last but one festival of the Sea, the tall ships just leaving harbour, the channel lined with hundreds of spectator craft from 8 ft RIBS up, and the beach crowded with spectators.

Enter Pilot lanch - gong UP harbour through the entrance making waves fit to rock the Mir, and creating a wash up the beach at Sally Port that was nothing short of a mini Tsunami, soaking many spectators, as well as causing no little difficulty to smaller spectator craft.

QHMs harbour net came alive with several protests. The offender was paged by QHM. His response: " well some of us have a job to do" was greeted by a stunned silence across the entire harbour....

What price professionalism and courtesy?
