Motor Sailor off Cardiff Today

Unexpectedly had a free day so took the boys sailing for the day ,visited the Rumney River ,had lunch aboard then passed this guy on the way back. If anyone knows them I can email the pic if they want it.

Locals get in and out at half tide by following a long and winding entrance channel but if visiting approach the entrance about an hour or two before HW then you can proceed directly from theRed Outfall Buoy to the river. Be aware of a High tension power line crossing with 14 meters clearance.

You wouldn't believe the Rumney River is a couple of miles away from Cardiff Bay would you...it's a different world! Actually the Ely river looked a bit like this in the old days when the word "Marina" hadn't been invented and rickety old wooden jetties from Penarth Docks were the ultimate in high-tech berthing /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I had a staging mooring opposite the oil jetty in the Ely in the 70s .i couldnt understand how easilly I got the berth when there was a waiting list.Until I realized how close the ships came to my boat when they swung in the river.. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Later I joined the rumney River Club and had a great time there ,It was mostly fishing boats but a small group of us had yachts (mostly small bilge keelers) and travelled far and wide.

Why do you have a lifebelt hanging from your forestay?

It must have been,You couldnt usually step off the boat without climbing some of the ladder.She was a gunter rigged motorsailor with a steel centerboard. Very slow sail or motor but we had some fun in her.
