I am looking at buying a motor boat, to be based in the med. I am looking for something like a 30' boat and spending around 30k. The problem is I know nothing about boats! I'm gradually looking through the previous posts and learning lots, but any help and tips would be appreciated. I dont even know if i need a licence!

Cheers,

Jon.

You need an international cerificate of competancy .ICC. at least that. Contact your local sea school. It,s a 2 day course and a lot of fun. I did mine last year and enjoyed so much i would do it agin just for fun. Plenty of 30 footers for 30 grand. Getting somewhere to park it is usually the problem. Don,t buy a boat until you find a berth. Better still buy a boat that has an existing rental agreement with the berth.
Not easy. Let us know how you get on

Hi
...and a potential welcome to boating.
Firstly, yes you do need a licence for the Med. An ICC (International Certificate of Competence) is the minimum requirement.
My suggestion is to charter first. It seems expensive but it is on par with the overall cost of boat ownership to be honest. Avoid peak season, too expensive, crowded marinas, too hot, and not the best time for smooth seas in the Med.
There is a chap on this website called Sun_Coast., you may want to visit his site for some ideas.
Some charter companies will help you take the ICC. Check this but I think some companies want two people on board to have ICC.
You're right in looking for 30ft++ or you will have more days in than out.
hope this helps and the best of luck
David

Thanks for the info guys. If I do the ICC course, do I need to do the RYA courses too (Competent Crew, Day Skipper, and Coastal Skipper)? Is it advisable to do these courses anyway? What's the approximate cost and duration of these courses?

And how do I make smiley faces appear????

Cheers,

Jon.

I would advise doing a theory course first, RYA day or coastal skipper.

I did the coastal skipper without doing to day flavour first, and it wasn't a problem. It cost £180, one evening per week for 24 weeks. Miny you, don't leave it too long afterwards before you do your practical, there's a lot to remember!

If you just want the ticket for ICC its a 2 day course with a liscence at the end of it
No exam as such. You can't really fail and its done and out the way. The more training you get obviously the better. to get this/forums/images/icons/smile.gif you do this [ smile ]
but without the big gaps. works with lots of other words too just try some like frown/forums/images/icons/frown.gif etc My icc cost £250 'cos I was lucky

ICC and RYA

If you do the RYA's Power Boat Level II two day course you can then use this certificate to get an ICC just send it off to RYA with a cheque for I think about £25.

So am I right in saying I dont necessarily need to do the Day Skippers course etc, just the ICC. Could I just get an ICC and then go blasting off around the English coast line and then down to France? Surely there's more to it than that, legally.

Obviously there's the VHF bit to do, which shouldn't be a problem for me, as I 've used marine band before when flying the Coastguard aircraft around Britain.

Actually true for France but not Italy where the ICC is a requirement (Spain??). The Guardia Financia (with nothing else to do) will pull you up from time to time and inspect such things as ICC (They pretend to know what they are looking at!)
I think what got us on to ICC was the concept of chartering where it's likely to be required by the charterers.

Agree here re chartering. Chartered a boat in SoF this Summer and no way would they accept anything less than an ICC, they get to then hire out with one of their skippers for much moula...

<font color=blue>So! You are stating that Italy ignores International Maritime Law according all vessels freedom and right of Navigation and that the adjunct on crew qualification (article 86?) is the responsibility of the Country under which flag the vessel is registered.
Of course someone renting you a vessel can insist on their standards also Italy can insist on a level of qualification for any vessel flying their flag. This is why you have flags of convenience.

<font color=blue>Problem is do they know international law too? The days when a British vessel whistled up a the Royal Navy are somewhat gone /forums/images/icons/wink.gif
Fact is, you are on their turf and who's goning to stop them making up the rules as they go along. Frankly I am still wondering how Holland/France/Germany etc. can demand bits of paper off us too. International Maritime Law also covers the transit of vessels from landlocked countries more or less saying the same thing. Starts getting a bit too complex there.

Remember they do have certain other rights to stop and search etc. Its the certification of crew they have no authority over.

Hmm! There have been numerous threads and magazine articles about Turkey or Greece (can't remember) applying taxes to visiting boats that are illegal under EU law, but there's no point argueing if your boat is going to be confiscated, seems to be the common view.

Maybe we should be demanding certification of crew, after all everyone is complaining about the lack of seamanship amongst the vessels in the English channel, which causes them to ignore regular coastguard radio warnings, patrol vessels, and buoys, and still hit a wreck visible by radar.
